Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team dropped its first Northeast-10 Conference contest of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Franklin Pierce Ravens by a 1-0 decision. Prior to the start of the game, the team celebrated its five graduating seniors:Â
Taylor Sipos,Â
Nicole Forte,Â
Lauren Viggiano,Â
Jeanine Nunez andÂ
Sage Dieterle.Â
For the second straight game, the Panthers (13-2, 11- 1 NE10) were undone by a second-half score by the opposing team, after falling in a similar 1-0 decision against Wilmington (Del.) on Thursday night.
The Ravens, ranked sixth in the first NCAA Division II East Regional poll with the Panthers on top last Monday, hung tough for the duration of the contest thanks in part to the efforts of senior keeper Casey Cook, who made five saves, one off her season-high.
In the 78th minute, the Ravens'Â Veronica Marques sprinted through and beat the Adelphi defense, creating a one-on-one chance against keeper
Isabel Sandstrom. The rookie made a valiant dive left, but Marques put the ball in the left corner just out of her reach for the lone score in the game.Â
Adelphi's best effort to score in the contest came in the 67th minute, as
Jeanine Nunez rifled a shot from the right side of the box which seemed destined to find its way past Cook and into the left corner, but the Ravens diving keeper got the tips of her fingers on it with enough momentum to send the ball wide. Following the Franklin Pierce goal, Adelphi managed just one shot at the Franklin Pierce defense clamped down, with Sipos' lone effort being saved in the 87th minute.
Adelphi caps the regular season with a pair of road contest, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest in Springfield, Mass. against American Int'l on Wednesday night.
