Volleyball Succumbs to Southern New Hampshire, 3-2

Garden City, N.Y. - For the second straight match, the Adelphi University volleyball team built a 2-0 lead but were unable to seal the deal, as the Southern New Hampshire Penmen saved a match point in the fourth set en route to handing Adelphi its first loss of the season at home, 3-2 (17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-8).

A career-high 19 kills from McKenna Clawson helped buoy Adelphi (8-11, 4-3 NE10) to a 2-0 lead, as the Panthers hit .379 and .263 over the course of the first two sets. However, SNHU staged a third set comeback from an early deficit, wrestling control away from the Brown and Gold with a 6-1 run from 16-14 down, a stretch which extended to 11 of the last 16 points to get on the set scoreboard.

The fourth set proved pivotal and was one of runs, which SNHU winning the first three points before Adelphi responded with eight of the next nine to double up an early lead. Never beaten, SNHU finally pulled even at 14-14, and neither side could pull away until the Penmen steadily built an advantage that gave them three set points at 24-21.

However, two kills from Clawson, a big block from her and Madison Canestrari and a solo block effort for Canestrari saved the trio of chances and gave Adelphi a match point, but a kill from SNHU's Marisa Coronis, an ace and a ball-handling error snuck the set to the visitors, taking Adelphi the distance.

Three Panther attack errors put the Brown and Gold behind early in the fifth, but Adelphi battled back on the serve of Courtney Crook, taking a slim one-point lead but were unable to pull away much further. SNHU edged in front once more until a Victoria Cast kill tied the set at 7-7, but the Penmen would not be denied the victory, streaking away with eight of the last nine points.

Cast joined Clawson with 15 kills, one off her career-high, while Megan Manierski delivered 39 set assists and Katarina Warburton anchored the defense with 31 digs. Clawson chipped in a double-double with 19 digs, while Rebecca Seeba added 17 in the back line, and Canestrari anchored the front line defense with five total blocks.

The Panthers will have a quick turnaround, facing Franklin Pierce University in a 1 p.m. NE10 contest on Saturday, Oct. 21.
