Garden City, N.Y. - After an impressive three-game winning streak in Northeast-10 Conference play, the Adelphi University field hockey team faltered against No. 5 LIU Post on Thursday afternoon by a 1-0 decision.
In the first half, both teams went scoreless for the first 26 minutes before the Pioneers (14-2) broke the silence. Just before the 27th minute, Tarryn Morris of LIU Post received a pass from Sammy Bell, and was able to take advantage of an open net. The Pioneers ultimately managed to maintain the upper hand from that point on, 1-0.
For the duration of the match, neither Adelphi (6-9) nor LIU Post found the goal. The visitors continued firing shots in the second half however, Jessica Lodato made two unbelievable defensive saves within four minutes of each other. The saves were crucial components to the Adelphi defense, despite the loss.
Amanda Gargiulo held the Pioneers to a single goal, finishing with seven saves against the visitor's 14 shots (eight on goal). LIU Post held an edge over the Panthers in corners 5-4 at the end of the contest, the second between the two teams this year, which is not countable towards the NE10 standings.
The field hockey program raised $300 selling pink T-shirts throughout this afternoon's game for breast cancer research. All of the funds are being donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Brown and Gold have another quick turnaround with two days to prepare for a road match with Saint Michael's College on Saturday morning. The team will travel to Colchester, VT for an 11 a.m. start on Oct. 21.
