Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Taylor Kaczynski recorded the first multiple-goal game of his collegiate career on Wednesday night, leading the 14th-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory on Motamed Field.
Kaczynski, who appeared in just seven matches last season as a freshman and scored two goals before suffering a season-ending injury, net his first two goals of the season - one in the first half and one in the second - to see Adelphi (10-1-2, 8-1-1 NE10) through to a victory.
The Dix Hills, N.Y. native broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute, as he met a long cross from
Ofek Pinto in front of the goal, shooting past Saint Rose keeper Gianni Carillo for the game's first score. The Golden Knights (5-7-1, 5-4-1 NE10) quickly drew level as Vince Matozzo came off the bench and creating something out of nothing, rocketing a shot towards the upper right corner of the Adelphi goal, which deflected off
Joseph Thomann and the crossbar before counting against
Raymond Leto.
The teams were even in total shots taken in the first half, 7-7, but Adelphi's offensive pressure ramped up in the second 45 minutes, outshooting the visitors 15-3. One of those shots came off the foot of Kaczynski again, as he corralled a loose ball through diving traffic from
Federico De Oliveira and snuck it past Carillo for what proved to be the game-winner.
Adelphi has several late opportunities to tack on some breathing room, none the least of which came from Andre de Giorgi's seven total shots in the second half, but Carillo kept his team in it with nine total saves, six in the second half.
The Panthers, ranked sixth in the first edition of the NCAA Division II East Regional poll released on Wednesday, return to action on the road at Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Oct. 21 in a 4 p.m. contest.
