Volleyball Downed at Undefeated New Haven

West Haven, Conn. - Despite a 2-0 advantage in the match, the Adelphi University volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to the top team in the conference standings, University of New Haven. The Panthers (8-10, 4-2 NE10) were unable to take down the undefeated Chargers (14-7, 9-0 NE10) on Deborah Chin Court Tuesday evening.

McKenna Clawson set a new career-high in the loss, finishing with 20 kills and earning the double-double with 17 digs on defense. The only other Panther in double-figure kills was Madison Canestrari, who contributed 10. Rebecca Seeba led the defenders with a career-best 21 digs as Katarina Warburton also chipped in 17.

The Panthers battled back from deficits in both of the opening sets, earning back-to-back 25-23 wins to lead in the match. With 18 kills as a team in the first and best hitting percentage of the evening (.277), Adelphi capitalized on a few New Haven miscues down the stretch to secure the first-set win. The home team was responsible for several strong runs in the second, but the visitors won three of the last five points to push ahead.

In the third frame, the Chargers used a .317 percentage on the floor and a late lead to break the Adelphi momentum and the silence with a 25-20 decision. The teams went back-and-forth in the fourth set, until the hosts pulled away with a three-point run to hold a lead they never relinquished. In much of the same way that Adelphi won two straight sets with the same score, New Haven posted another 25-20 win to make it a 2-2 contest.

The Chargers best hitting came in the deciding set when they finished without an error in 12 attempts, putting six of those attempts to the floor for kills. Adelphi was unable to string together any points to gain speed, ultimately dropping the fifth by a 15-6 final decision.

The team is back in action on Friday, October 20 when they host Southern New Hampshire University at 7:00 p.m. on their home court. Leading up to the weekend games, the team will be selling pink volleyball t-shirts and ribbons at other Adelphi events in support of breast cancer awareness month, as well as promoting their "Dig-A-Thon". Supporters are encouraged to support by donating a flat amount or pledging an amount per dig in both contests this weekend.
