Garden City, N.Y. - After warming up in pink T-shirts to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Adelphi University field hockey team hosted Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon.
After 70 minutes of play, and thanks to five second-half goals, the Brown and Gold claimed the victory over the Owls, 6-1.
Three minutes into the first half, Libby Mercuri took on a Southern Connecticut defender one-on-one and put it past the keeper, giving Adelphi (6-8, 4-5 NE10) the advantage early.
Shortly after, Karley Welles of Southern snuck the ball passed Amanda Gargiulo on the right post just before the nine minute mark.
The Panthers came out in the second half on fire, scoring the second goal of match 90 seconds after the starting whistle. The goal came from the stick of Mercuri with the assist from Emily Power. Just three minutes later, Samantha Nizich took advantage of penalty corner by Danielle Kempf to net the third goal for Adelphi from the top of the arc.
After another 13 minutes of play, a backhanded tip from Kate Manson to Kempf put the Panthers up, 4-1 after sticking it passed the Owls (2-13, 0-9 NE10) keeper, Brianna Craft. Three minutes later, Mercuri netted her hat trick goal as a result of a penalty corner while Manson tallied her second assist of the afternoon.
The final goal of the Northeast-10 Conference matchup marked Mercuri's fourth on the day, and secured the 6-1 Brown and Gold victory. Gargiulo finished with two saves in the .Â
Adelphi will have a quick turnaround as it hosts the Pioneers of LIU Post on Thursday night on Motamed Field. The contest will commence at 4 p.m.
