Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Adelphi Athletics

Taylor's Tally Leads #10 Women's Soccer to 2OT Win at Stonehill, 2-1

Easton, Mass. - With the 10th-ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team just 53 seconds away from a 1-1 draw with the Stonehill College Skyhawks, junior Savannah Taylor's first goal of the season sent the Panthers home with a dramatic Northeast-10 victory, 2-1.

Taylor, who also assisted on Kerianne Scorce's tally in the first half, had yet to score on the season as one of the Panthers' primary defenders, but saw the ball drop back to her, and the junior took a drive from the right just inside the 18-yard box for the game-winning score.

Adelphi (12-0, 10-0 NE10) avenged two losses to Stonehill from a season ago, a 4-3 regular season defeat and a 1-0 loss in the NE10 semifinals with the victory, and remained perfect on the season. Freshman keeper Isabel Sandstrom saw her shutout streak of nearly five-and-a-half games end, as she surrendered her first goal in five games to a cutting Alex Giardina in the 28th minute.

Giardina beat her defender and fired across the box past Sandstrom to tie the game in the first half, a margin which stood for over 80 minutes from that point. Jeanine Nunez, author of Adelphi's last-minute regulation tally in the Panthers' previous game vs. New Haven on Wednesday, made her presence felt on defense for the second straight game.

The senior headed out a header from Giardina, took from 10 yards out, in the 57th minute to keep the game tied 1-1 and record her second defensive save in as many games.

When all was said and done, Adelphi held a 24-11 advantage in shots, 11-5 on goal, which included an 11-6 margin in the second half and 5-1 in the two overtime periods. Stonehill's Kaitlin Brown made nine total saves in the setback against the Panther attack, while Sandstrom tallied three overall.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday night, as they welcome in league foe Saint Rose for a 7 p.m. NE10 contest on Oct. 17. Adelphi holds a two-game lead over the Golden Knights in the NE10 standings.
