Four Goals in the Second Lead Field Hockey to Second Straight NE10 Win, 5-0 at AIC

Springfield, Mass. - Four goals in the second half led the Adelphi University field hockey team to back-to-back Northeast-10 conference victories this week, as a Saturday road shutout for Adelphi over American International College ended in favor of the Panthers, 5-0.

The lone goal of the first half was credited to Libby Mercuri just before the 18th minute as the senior netted the goal off a rebound on a penalty advantage corner. The Brown and Gold (5-8, 3-5 NE10) held an edge over AIC (2-12, 1-6 NE10) in shots, 13-0, over the first 35 minutes and continued that momentum into the second half.

Adelphi came out blazing in the second half, scoring the second goal of the match just one minute into the period. Mercuri put her second of the contest in the cage off an assist from Jackie Brown thanks to a deflected shot from the right corner.

Six minutes later, Brown took the ball herself up field to cut in from the right side and score the third goal for the Panthers, putting them up 3-0. Just two minutes later, Brown got her second assist as Justine DeLuca scored her first of the afternoon.

With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Danielle Kempf added another tally to the scoreboard for the Brown and Gold off a deflected shot into the high left corner, putting them up 5-0.

Adelphi out-shot the Yellow Jackets 23-6, 12 of the Panthers being on goal. Chelsea Lombardo had three saves in her first start for Adelphi, and let in no goals for AIC.

The Brown and Gold return to Garden City for a home contest on Oct. 17 against Southern Connecticut State University. The match will begin at 4 p.m. on Motamed Field.
