Garden City, N.Y. - In its second straight meeting against a United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 team, the second-ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team was dealt its first loss of the season to the 14th-ranked Merrimack College Warriors on Motamed Field, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Adelphi (9-1-2, 7-1-1 NE10) led the game 1-0 just 16 minutes in, as
Joseph Sanchez buried a free kick in between the right post and Merrimack keeper Lucas Rezende, but that proved to be the lone goal the Brown and Gold would tally in the contest.
The Warriors (11-1-1, 8-0-1 NE10) answered back in the 29th minute, as Josue Ruiz Maya corralled a loose ball and fired a strike across and past
Raymond Leto to tie the game at 1-1, but the contest would not be decided until late in the second half.
A physical contest saw 26 combined team fouls and five yellow cards, including four in the second half, but Adelphi was unable to net the equalizer despite several opportunities late in the second half.
A free kick led to Merrimack going in front in the 47th minute, as Michael Dushman scored his first goal of the season from Lars Sund, giving the Warriors a lead they would never relinquish.
Adelphi's best looks at goal in the waning minutes came back-to-back in the 85th and 88th, off the head of
Alex Varkatzas and the foot of
James Thristino, but the attempts missed high and wide, respectively. Though Adelphi held a 17-7 edge in total shots, just five of the Panthers' attempts were on goal, as Rezende made four saves.Â
Adelphi looks to get back on the winning track against Saint Rose on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Motamed Field.
