Rochester, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University men's basketball team rang in 2017 with its fifth straight win, edging the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College, 90-85, on the road on Monday afternoon to conclude non-conference play.
Jack Laffey and
Michael Coffey were once again at the forefront of the Adelphi (11-3) offense, with Laffey pacing all scorers with 23 points and Coffey adding 20.
Austin Beech turned in 16 points off the bench, scoring in double figures for the fourth time in the past five games, while
Conor McGuinness rounded out the effort with a second straight double-double behind 14 points and 10 assists. Roberts Wesleyan (1-11) had three score in double figures in defeat, paced by 18 from both Zach Panebianco and Isaiah Lewis.
The first half saw five ties and seven lead changes over the first 10 minutes, and it was the host Redhawks who held the lead for almost the entirety of the first half. Roberts Wesleyan's lead grew to a game-high 10 with 3:15 to play, but a
Manny Suarez triple from deep kicked off a 13-5 run for the Brown and Gold to end the half and whittle the deficit to two at 49-47, as the stretch also saw Coffey and Laffey sink shots from deep.
Two more threes from Coffey and Laffey saw Adelphi take its first lead since the early going to 55-52 to begin the second half, but Malik Dare responded for the hosts to score the next four points and put them back on top by one, but a Laffey layup on the next trip down the floor put Adelphi back on top. A 17-7 run over the next four minutes for the Panthers put them ahead by nine, 72-63 with 12:06 remaining, before back-to-back threes by the Redhawks made it a two-point game at 74-72 with just over 10 to play.
The hosts' late run pushed them ahead again by one, as Lewis went up for two for a 79-78 lead, and a Panebianco bucket tied the game for the final time at 81-81. However, a 13-5 run for the Panthers, including 6-8 at the charity stripe, seal the win for Adelphi.
The Panthers return to the CRS and NE10 play on Wednesday, Jan. 4 when they host the Ravens of Franklin Pierce at 7:30 pm.
