Garden City, N.Y. -- Two 50-point halves for the visiting Franklin Pierce Ravens powered them past the Adelphi University men's basketball team on Wednesday night, snapping the Panthers' five-game winning streak as the team returned to Northeast-10 play.
Adelphi (11-4, 4-3 NE10) was paced in the setback by 28 points from
Manny Suarez, as the junior went 7-11 from the field and 13-13 from the charity stripe to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Also joining him in double figures was
Austin Beech, who scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting, while
Michael Coffey scored 13. The Ravens (9-5, 6-2 NE10) had five players net double figures, anchored by 20 points off the bench from Oladoyin Fadojutimi.
A 5-0 spurt for the Panthers to start the game thanks to a Suarez layup and a Laffey triple was quickly erased, as Adelphi went cold from the floor and the visiting Ravens exploded for a 22-3 run over the next six-plus minutes, as Matt Banton made a trio of shots from behind the arc.
Â
However, the Panthers started to claw into the deficit, going on an 8-0 run thanks to the efforts of Suarez and Coffey that saw them also go a perfect 5-5 at the charity stripe combined, as the scoring stretch expanded to 15-4 over the ensuing minutes. Adelphi's hot stretch from the field was capped as Beech executed an old-fashioned three-point play to make it an eight-point, 31-23 game with 7:15 to play in the first.
Â
While the Panthers cut the margin to eight twice more in the closing minutes of the half, a 9-2 run over the final 4:09, including the final seven points, saw the Ravens take an 18-point lead into the locker room, 50-32.
A 6-0 run for the Panthers pulled them to within 12 to begin the second half, but the Brown and Gold were never able to draw any closer than that, as the Ravens scored 10 of the next 12 points to push the lead to what was a game-high 20, as the margin grew to as high as 36 points late.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 when they travel up north to take on the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College at 3:30 pm.
NOTES
- Adelphi is 0-2 this season when the opposing team scores over 100 points.Â
