Manchester, N.H. -- A plus-14 margin on the boards and a combined 38 points for
Sierra Clark and
Simone Hobdy helped pace the #25 Adelphi University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers downed the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on the road, 63-46, for their 11th straight win.
Adelphi (15-2, 10-0 NE10) held a 50-36 edge in rebounding in the game, including a 16-6 edge on offensive boards, as Calli Balfour pulled down a game-high 13 and Clark and
Sierra Schrader each grabbed 11 misses. The senior Sierra tandem each recorded a double-double, as Clark pumped in a game-high 23 points while Schrader added 11 to go along with Hobdy's 15 points. The Panthers' defensive prowess also shone through on the block, as
Natalie Fekula had a career-high four and Clark added two. SNHU (8-9, 3-7 NE10) got 13 points from Catherine Stinson and 12 from Kylie Lorenzen in the loss.Â
Clark accounted for the bulk of Adelphi's scoring in the first quarter, as she totaled nine points in the first period which Adelphi led 16-13 by the close. The Panthers trailed by just one twice in the frame, accounting for their only two deficits of the game, and used an 11-2 scoring output in the second quarter to take a 27-15 lead at the break. The Brown and Gold scored the first six points of the second frame thanks to buckets by Clark, Hobdy and Schrader, as they kept the Penmen cold from the field for 10 minutes -- with the home team's only two points coming as Lorenzen sank two from the charity stripe with 4:32 to play.
The Penmen pushed out on an 8-3 spurt to start the third to cut the lead to seven, before Hobdy converted on the three-point play and Clark went up for two off a SNHU turnover to restore a 12-point lead at 35-23 with 7:04 left in the period. The home team again cut the lead to as low as seven with 3:32 remaining thanks to a 5-0 spurt, but Adelphi's late offense restored the double-digit lead with nine of the final 13 points, including a bucket from
Niajah Morgan off the bench and a three-pointer from
Julia Gnieser.
As Adelphi's lead grew to 17 in the early fourth period action, the Panthers pushed ahead by a game-high 23 at 61-38 thanks to a Morgan jumper and treys from Hobdy and Schrader with 4:18 to play. That proved to be the high watermark for the Panthers in the contest, as the Penmen got no close for the duration than the 17-point final.
The Brown and Gold are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18, traveling to Stonehill for a 5:30 pm NE10 contest.Â
