#18 Women's Basketball Stifles Stonehill, 62-38 for 12th Straight Win

South Easton, Mass. -- Holding the hosts to single digits in the second and fourth quarters, the #18 Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated the Stonehill College Skyhawks, 62-38, on the road to run its winning streak to a dozen on Wednesday night.

Coming into tonight's play, Adelphi was ranked 18th in WBCA Division II national poll, and also checked in 11th in D2SIDA Media Top 25, and No. 1 in D2SIDA East Region poll.

Sierra Clark, despite playing limited minutes in the first half due to two first-quarter fouls, still paced Adelphi (16-2, 11-0 NE10) in scoring with a game-high 19 points, falling short of a double-double by one rebound, and blocking a career-high five shots. Clark paced the Panthers in blocked shots, as the team totaled 11 with help from three off the bench by Natalie Fekula. Also scoring in double figures for the Panthers was Calli Balfour, who bounced back from a season-low in scoring against Southern New Hampshire for 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Simone Hobdy chipped in 10 points, three assists and three steals. The Skyhawks (7-9, 6-6 NE10) were paced by 12 points from Elizabeth Grip.

After the Skyhawks scored the first four points of the game, the Panthers hit back with the next seven, increasing the run to 14-2 as Hobdy knocked down a jumper with 3:34 to play until the end of the period. After the hosts scored the last four of the first frame and Balfour and Samantha Hyslip traded buckets to begin the second, the Brown and Gold ripped off a 15-2 stretch to end the quarter to take command at the half, 29-14.

The two teams went back and forth to begin the third, with Adelphi pulling away to take a 26-point lead at 49-23, using a 9-0 spurt that saw Julia Gnieser sink a three and Balfour score five, with 2:01 remaining in the period. The Skyhawks scored the last six points of the third, but were unable to get closer than 20 for the duration, as the Panthers edged in scoring in the period, 13-9.

The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host Merrimack in a 1:30 pm NE10 contest.

NOTES
- Clark led the nation alone in double-doubles coming into Wednesday's play, and has posted two or more blocks in four of the past five games.
- Balfour, with five steals tonight, has posted five or more in six games this season.
