Santoro Lifts #11 Women's Soccer Past #3 Bridgeport 1-0

Garden City, N.Y. - A goal in the 51st minute from Morgan Santoro lifted the 11th ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win versus the third ranked University of Bridgeport earlier this evening on Motamed Field.

Following a scoreless first half where Adelphi (2-0) held a slight advantage in shots, 7-6, the Brown and Gold came out on the attack in the second period that led to the early goal. Kelsey Simpson created space on the left sideline and directed a ball into the middle of the field for Santoro who quickly allowed the ball to travel to her right foot. With that foot, the senior midfielder attempted a shot from nearly 35 yards out that stuck inside the right upper corner of the net to put the Panthers ahead.

Despite not scoring again, the Panthers managed to outshoot the Purple Knights (1-1) 10-3 in the final 45 minutes to finish the game with a 17-9 margin. On the other side of the field, Anne Marie Ulliac preserved the shutout with three saves, two coming in the first half. Ulliac's counterpart, Jennifer Wendelius stopped six attempts in the effort for Bridgeport.

Santoro led the Panthers with six shots on the night, three of them being put on target. Laura Gomez and Victoria Antonino were each responsible for three shots to help push the attack for Adelphi. However, Bridgeport managed created five corner kicks compared to one for the Brown and Gold.

Looking ahead, Adelphi returns to Motamed Field on Saturday for a third straight home match. The Panthers are scheduled to host Saint Anselm for the Northeast-10 Conference opener at 1:00 pm.

Notes:
-
Bridgeport upended the Panthers 2-1 during last year's NCAA East Region Championship.
- Santoro was also responsible for the lone goal during a 1-0 win against 10th ranked Saint Rose during the 2015 season.
