Pleasantville, N.Y. – First-half goals for
Jamie Ahrens and
Charlotte Smith proved to be all the offense the Adelphi University field hockey team needed to pick up its first win of the season on Wednesday night, 2-0 over the Pace University Setters.
The Panthers (1-1) got on the board just under 10 minutes into the contest, after they were awarded a penalty corner opportunity.
Rachel Colvin sent the corner in, and after
Elissa Frein fed the ball to Ahrens in the top left corner, the junior fired the ball past Pace keeper Lesly Sanchez Alvarez for the 1-0 lead at the 9:01 mark.
The Brown and Gold doubled up just over a minute later on Smith's unassisted score, as Pace (1-1) found themselves down a player thanks to a green card to Jane Kasparian. Smith took the shot from the left of the cage, one of eight shots on goal for the Panthers in the game, to push the lead to 2-0.
That offense proved to be all the Panthers needed, as Sanchez Alvarez's six saves in the game kept Adelphi off the board, while the Brown and Gold defense limited the Setters to just four total shots in the game.
Amanda Gargiulo posted a pair of saves for the Panthers in the second half, as she saved both Pace shots on goal in the second 35 minutes.
The Brown and Gold return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on the Yellow Jackets of American International at 1 pm.
NOTES
- Smith scored her first career goal in the contest. The midfielder was a Northeast-10 All Rookie pick in 2015 as a freshman.
- Adelphi led 8-1 in total penalty corners in the contest.
