Field Hockey Stung by AIC, 4-1

Springfield, Mass. -- Despite holding the edge in overall shots, the Adelphi University field hockey team was unable to muster more than one goal against the American International College Yellow Jackets, falling 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in Springfield.

After 20 minutes of scoreless play in which both teams had opportunities to score, AIC (3-1) capitalized first when junior midfielder Payton Montague cleaned up in front of the net at 20:39 and beat Amanda Gargiulo for the first score of the game for either team. The Yellow Jackets' Taylor Ruscillo the lead just over seven minutes later, as she scored on the left side of the cage for her first of the season.

AIC held the edge in shots on goal at 3-2 after the first half, with both teams taking seven, and the Jackets also had a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Just over four minutes into the second half, Samantha Nizich had a scoring chance for the Brown and Gold (1-2), but her shot clang off the post. With the opportunity lost, AIC came down the other end, and Montague scored her second of the game at 42:18 to make it 3-0.

With just under 11 minutes to play in the game, the Yellow Jackets' Jenny Holmquist found Emma Heroth for the home team's fourth goal of the game at 59:04. The Panthers broke up the shutout as time wound down, as freshman forward Elissa Frein scored at 62:32, but were unable to tally any more offense from there. AIC goalkeeper Taylor Ross made one of her five saves in the final minutes, and the Yellow Jacket defense blocked two shots.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, Sept. 11, when they return to Long Island to face Molloy on the road at 3 pm.
