Garden City, N.Y. - An early goal and a late goal helped the Adelphi University men's soccer team pick up 2-0 victory against Dominican, the first of the 2016 campaign, earlier tonight on Motamed Field.
Early on in the first half, the Brown and Gold (1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage as
Alejandro Penzini connected on a header off a
John Stojcevski corner kick. From the left corner, Stojcevski placed a ball that Penzini was able to head inside the left post for the early advantage. The Panthers went into halftime with a 12-4 shot advantage as well as adding seven corner kicks, however, the lone goal was the only tally on the scoreboard.
After nearly 35 minutes into the second half went by, Adelphi was finally able to find an insurance goal as
Caelan Hueber converted a Talyor Kaczynski cross with a one touch into the middle of the net.
Spenser Powell kept the shutout in place by making seven saves throughout the game, including five in the second half, to create a new career-high. Earlier in the game, Penzini stopped a shot on the goal line to keep the Chargers (0-2) off the board.
The Brown and Gold finished with a 26-12 margin in shots while also holding a 12-3 advantage in corners. In the effort for Dominican, Steven Hegner made 12 saves between the posts.
Adelphi enjoys a week off before returning to the field next Saturday for a non-conference tilt against Millersville starting at 4:00 pm.
Notes:
- Powell's previous career-high in saves was four.
- Kaczynski finishes his debut week with three points after scoring Thursday evening.
