Men's Soccer Blanks #18 Millersville 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. – Finishing off a three-game home stand to start the 2016 season, the Adelphi University men's soccer team came away with a 3-0 win against Millersville University, ranked 18th in the latest NSCAA National Poll, earlier today on Motamed Field.

Two newcomers for the Panthers (2-1) helped create a 2-0 lead for the home team in the first 16 minutes. During the 12th minute, James Thristino made a short pass to Florent Girardin who responded with a one step inside the 18-yard box to strike for the first goal inside the left post.

Less than five minutes later, Joseph Sanchez placed a ball in the middle to find the head of Caelan Hueber in front of the net. Hueber netted the second goal of the game as Adelphi went into the break with the 2-0 lead.

The Brown and Gold created an 8-5 shot margin in the half while also holding a 2-1 corner kick advantage. Darian McCauley kept Millersville (3-1) within striking distance after 45 minutes by making three saves while Spenser Powell made one stop in the period.

In the second half, Powell made four saves in net to help preserve the shutout for the Brown and Gold while also being aided by an additional goal. The tally came during the 74th minute as Sanchez picked up his second assist as Thristino finished off a deflected rebound inside the box. The attempt was initially set up on a set piece from John Stojcevski out on the left flank.

The Panthers outshot their opponent 15-10 throughout the game while also creating six corner kicks and only yielding four. Powell finished with five saves while five different individuals each created three shots.

Up next, Adelphi travels to New Haven for the Northeast-10 Conference opener on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 pm in West Haven, Conn.
