Garden City, N.Y. - A second half penalty kick proved to be the difference for the fifth ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team in a 2-1 victory against visiting East Stroudsburg, the fourth ranked team in the nation, earlier this evening in non-conference action on Motamed Field.
Following a foul on a run from
Morgan Santoro inside the 18-yard box in the 76th minute, a penalty kick from
Jeanine Nunez put the Brown and Gold (6-1) ahead 2-1. The tally finished as the deciding factor in the NSCAA top-five matchup.
The Warriors (7-1) struck first during the first half as Lila Carpenter put the visitors ahead. Carpenter took a shot from 30 yards out that went over
Anne Marie Ulliac's head on a fly and just under the crossbar. However, the Panthers quickly responded as Santoro notched her ninth goal of the season. The senior posted the goal from just outside of the 18-yard box to even the score.
Following a 14-4 shot advantage in the first half, Adelphi increased the final margin to 24-6 with a 10-2 difference in the final period. The Panthers also owned a 6-3 corner kick advantage. Meanwhile, Jules Harris stopped four shots in each half for the Warriors to keep the visitors in striking distance late in the game with Ulliac making three total saves.
The Panthers continue a busy week with a trip to Merrimack on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm Northeast-10 Conference contest.
Notes:
- Santoro was named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll earlier today for her performance last week.
- Adelphi leads the conference in scoring with a 3.71 goals per-game average while attempting a league-high 25.0 shots per-match.
