Women's Soccer Opens Season With 9-0 Win Against Bloomfield

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team opened the season this evening with a 9-0 victory against visiting Bloomfield in non-conference action on Motamed Field. The Panthers entered the season ranked 13th in the NSCAA Preseason Poll.

Morgan Santoro led the midfield with three assists while Jeanine Nunez, Taylor Sipos and Kelsey Simpson all added two goals each. Simpson also posted an assist for the Brown and Gold (1-0). Coming off the bench, Amanda Rainey added a goal and an assist while Sarah Barone Stern netted a goal and Taylor Iacono dished an assist.

The Panthers registered seven of the nine goals during the opening 45 minutes as 21 shots were taken. Sipos opened the scoring in the ninth minute as quickly followed up by Jeanine Nunez. Santoro found Sipos with a through ball before Simpson sent a ball into the box from the left to find Nunez. Before the 13th minute, Nunez added her second tally of the game with a penalty kick.

The next two goals came unassisted as Victoria Antonino and Simpon scored within a minute of each other to extend the score to 5-0 before Sipos scored again in the 37th minute. After Santoro assisted on Sipos' second goal, the senior once again found a teammate in Simpson to put the Brown and Gold ahead 7-0 at halftime.

Nearly 13 minutes into the second half, Barone Stern added her first of the season off a Rainey pass before the freshman added her first collegiate goal in the 68th minute as Iacono picked up the helper.

Adelphi finished with a 31-0 shot advantage while also adding eight corner kicks. In the effort for Bloomfield, Emira Sela posted 13 saves between the posts.

The Panthers return to the familiar grounds of Motamed Field this Wednesday at 7:00 pm to face fourth ranked Bridgeport.

Notes:
-
Wednesday's matchup marks a rematch of last year's NCAA East Region Championship which saw the Purple Knights advance with a 2-1 decision.
- The goal count is the most for Adelphi since the 2004 season when the Panthers upended Concordia 10-0 on November 11th. The Brown and Gold went on to the National Championship game that season.
