Garden City, N.Y. -- A goal by Bloomsburg's Sam Peters just 1:13 into the game led the Huskies past the Adelphi University field hockey team, 5-1, in the team's season opener on Friday night at Motamed Field.
The Huskies' lead doubled with just 39 seconds remaining until halftime, as Peters beat
Amanda Gargiulo in net to close out the opening half with the road team ahead, 2-0. The Huskies held a 13-3 advantage in shots in the opening 30 minutes, as Lindsay Cassell's lone save came against
Jamie Ahrens at the 25:07 mark.
Bloomsburg doubled its lead to 4-0 in the second half, as Peters' hatrick and Peyton Shockley put the visiting team in front with under 10 minutes to play in the contest. To break up the shutout, Adelphi's lone goal came off the stick of
Kate Manson at the 65:44 mark in the second half, as the sophomore cleaned up off of a defensive safe to make the score 4-1, before the Huskies scored the final goal of the contest thanks to Morgan McAllister just about 30 seconds later to close out the game.
The Huskies held an edge in total shots, 21-11, with 14 of those shots coming on on goal compared to Adelphi's six. Gargiulo made a total of nine saves in net compared to counterpart Lindsay Cassell's five, and although Adelphi held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners, the Brown and Gold were unable to score on those opportunities.Â
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Northeast-10 Conference foe Pace for a 7:30 pm non-conference tilt.Â
NOTES
- Manson scored one goal last year in her freshman season.
- The Panthers checked in at No. 7 in the NFHCA preseason coaches' poll, while Bloomsburg ranked No. 8.
