Garden City, N.Y. - A goal early on in the second half was enough for the 20th ranked Adelphi University men's soccer team to upend visiting Le Moyne 1-0 earlier today on Motamed Field during Northeast-10 Conference action.
The first 45 minutes were unable to produce a tally for either side as 12 shots were attempted with Adelphi (4-1/2-0) having the advantage at 7-5 while also producing four corner kicks compared to two for the Dolphins (3-1-1/1-1). Additionally,
Spenser Powell and Ben Beaury made two saves apiece for their respective sides.
Following the first shot of the second half being attempted by Le Moyne, the Brown and Gold reversed the field with
James Thristino taking the first shot of the period for the Panthers. The attempt from just inside the 18-yard box resulted in the lone tally of the contest during the 49th minute as
Joseph Sanchez set up the reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Year for his second goal of the season.
In the final 41 minutes of regulation, the Dolphins kept the pressure on to find the equalizier that resulted in an 11-3 shot advantage in the second half. Powell, however, kept the clean sheet alive for Adelphi by making four stops. Le Moyne nearly found the tying tally in the 87 minute as Adam Resetarits struck the crossbar before Callum Donnelly put forth the final attempt in the 90th minute, sailing a shot high.
Despite the setback, Le Moyne finished with a 16-10 shot margin while also producing five corner kicks compared to four for the Panthers. Powell ended his afternoon with six saves, one shy of his career-high.
Looking ahead, Adelphi returns to Motamed Field on Wednesday to host NE-10 foe Assumption for a 7:00 pm contest.
Notes:
- The Panthers entered the NSCAA National Poll for the first time this week at number 20.
- Powell was named NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week following last weekend's win against Millersville.
