Garden City, N.Y. - Two goals in the final 15 minutes helped lift the ninth ranked LIU Post Pioneers to a 2-1 victory against the Adelphi University men's soccer team. The contest earlier this evening was the 2016 season opener for both programs.
Following a scoreless first half,
Matt Giaconelli fed a ball from deep in the right flank through the middle of the field that found
Taylor Kaczynski on the left side of the box. Kaczynski proceeded to register the first goal of the season in the 68th minute to put the Brown and Gold (0-1) up 1-0 with a swift left foot.
After nearly 10 minutes following the first tally, a set piece strike from Harry Pearse evened the score for the Pioneers (1-0). Pearse struck with a left foot from about 25 yards out on the right side, placing a perfect ball in the top left corner of the net during the 77th minute.
Both teams played the next 11 minutes even before a loose ball near the end line on the Adelphi side found Jason Lampkin who sent a pass to Charlie Ledula in the middle of the box. Ledula struck for the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute to allow LIU Post to earn the opening night victory.
LIU Post finished the evening with a 10-7 shot advantage, nine of which came in the second half, while also tallying four corner kicks in each half. Despite the loss,
Spenser Powell made four saves in net compared to one for his counterpart, Jesper Malmstrom.
Looking ahead, the Panthers return to action on Saturday to face Dominican for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
Notes:
- In the first game of the evening, Southern Connecticut defeated Dominican 2-1 following a 90-minute rain and lightning delay.
- Last season, the Panthers and Pioneers played to a 2-2 draw to open the season.
