Baseball Sweeps Queens, 6-2 And 9-3, To Conclude Regular Season

Garden City, N.Y. - Concluding the regular season this afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader, the Adelphi University baseball team earned victories in both games against Queens by the final scores of 6-2 and 9-3.

John Fogarty and Michael Stack each collected three hits for the Panthers (25-21) while Stack drove in three runs on the day. Alex Zykoff added four RBI on two hits and Steve Withers scored three runs.

Game One
A hit by pitch on Zykoff plated the first of three runs in the first two innings for the Brown and Gold before Eric Hassell scored on a sacrifice fly from Fogarty. Leading off the second inning, Stack tripled down the right field line and score in the next at-bat as Brett Malm flied out to right field.

Following a run by the Knights (22-26) in the fourth, Zykoff pushed the lead to 5-1 with a two-run home run in the fifth that cleared the left field fence on a line drive and scored Robert Vani as well. Vani reached by walking with two outs in the previous at-bat. Withers added a RBI single in the sixth to bring the advantage to 6-1. Queens pushed one run across to cut the deficit to 6-2 in the ninth, however, Withers ended the game on one catch and a touch of the second base bag with a line out double play.

Zykoff drove in three runs in the opener while Stack scored twice. On the mound, Ed Baram earned his fourth win of the year by going five innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs. Matthew O'Connor added 2.2 innings of relief that included a strikeout.

Game Two
Similar to Adelphi in game one, the Knights tallied three runs in the first two innings of the nightcap. Kevin Koselar scored the lone run in the first inning by scoring on a fielding error after leading the game off with a single to center. In the second frame, Andrew Navarez and Karl Kelsin each picked up RBI hits to increase the lead to 3-0.

Trailing 3-0 midway through the third inning of the scheduled seven-inning game, the Brown and Gold scored six times in the bottom of the third to capture the lead. Following a RBI from Zykoff, Stack cleared a bases loaded opportunity with his second triple of the day which also gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead. Stack scored right after on Fogarty single followed by the center fielder adding the sixth run on a throwing error during a Tyler Warshefskie steal attempt.

Adelphi added three more runs in the sixth as Warshefskie and Withers each drove in a run. David Butler and Michael Demarest closed out the victory by combing to pitch the final three innings without allowing a run. Michael Tarpey earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief effort that included a strikeout. Stack finished the second game with three RBI while Withers scored twice.
