Garden City, N.Y. - A complete game shutout from Phillip Zdanowski helped The College of Saint Rose move on in the Northeast-10 Championship with a 4-0 upset of the top-seeded Adelphi University baseball team earlier today.
Zdanowski went the distance by scattering eight hits and striking out two batters while splitting 22 outs between fly outs and ground outs. The senior was also benefitted by three double plays as the Panthers (26-21) left six on-base.
The Golden Knights' (19-18) offense put together four one-run innings to create final margin, starting in the second inning. Mike Flynn plated the first run with RBI double in the top of the second to score Alec Caprarella. The sophomore started the two-out rally with a single up the middle followed by Flynn's double to right center.
In the next inning, three consecutive singles led to a 2-0 lead for Saint Rose as Tyler Ungerland scored Derek Reed. After two scoreless inning, the Golden Knights once again scored in back-to-back innings with a run in each top half of the sixth and seventh. Sean Maki drove in the lone run of the sixth followed by the second RBI single of the game for Ungerland in the seventh.
The Panthers most serious threat came during the sixth inning as
Steven Withers and
Kory Cassara connected for back-to-back one out singles. However, Zdanowski produced one of his three double plays to get out of the inning.
Alex Zykoff notched a double in the seventh and a single in the ninth, however, was unable to score on either opportunity.
Zykoff was one of three individuals to collect two hits on the afternoon for the Brown and Gold while also adding a stolen base. Cassara and
Michael Stack joined the senior with two hits a piece.
Jonathon Mulford pitched the first six innings, striking out six before exiting.
Matthew O'Connor and
Michael Demarest each added two strikeouts in relief effort.
Saint Rose move on to the double elimination Championship Weekend starting Thursday. This year's site will be hosted by the highest remaining Northeast Division program following tonight's action.
Meanwhile, the Panthers await the NCAA selection show to see if they have earned an at-large big into the Tournament field. The selection show is scheduled for 10:00 pm this Sunday, live on NCAA.com.
