Garden City, N.Y. -- With a combined three home runs and five RBIs,
Nicole Camera and
Brenna Martini led the Adelphi University softball team past the College of Saint Rose in the first of a three-game weekend series at Janet L. Ficke Field on Saturday, 11-3.
Camera and Martini each went deep in a three-run first inning for the Panthers (21-13, 11-2 NE-10) before Camera added her second solo shot of the game in the fourth.
Danielle Cutuli also drove in a pair of runs for Adelphi in a three-run fifth, while Camera, Martini,
Christina Palmenteri and
Krista King all had multiple hits on an afternoon when the Panthers pounded out 14 total.
Lindsay Mapes picked up the win in the circle, pitching five innings in the run-ruled win, surrendering three runs, working around four walks and striking out five.
King doubled to lead off the bottom of the first ahead of Martini's one out, two-run blast to get Adelphi started, before Camera too went deep on the first pitch for the solo shot. After working around a two on situation to start the game, Mapes struck out three in the second after getting handed the lead, and the Panthers added a run in the second when Palmenteri came around to score on a head's up play after King singled to the infield.Â
The Golden Knights (7-17,2-6 NE-10) Â scratched out a run in the third, as they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter to bring Briana Bowen to the plate. Wood singled to left to drive in a run, but Palmenteri fired a strike home to
Nicoletta Cuccio to get the second runner at the plate and end the inning.Â
Adelphi added three more in the third, as Martini singled to lead off and
Megan Lewis reached on a fielder's choice ahead of
Stephanie Staiano's RBI single to make it a 5-1 game. From there, Cutuli dropped in a single ahead of the Saint Rose rightfielder to make it 7-1 as Staiano and Lewis both came around to score. Carly Wood struck back off Mapes in the top of the fourth, however, as she cracked a two-out, two-run homer to center field to make it a 7-3 game,
Camera's second home run of the day came a half an inning later, however, as she parked one over the left field fence with two outs, and the Panther bats closed out the game in the fifth with three more runs. Pinch-hitter
Lauren Sandelier singled with one out to begin the string, as Palmenteri and King singled after her to plate a run and make it 9-3. From there, Cuccio smacked a one-out double into the gap in right center to score Palmenteri, before Martini scored King on the game-ending sacrifice fly to right.
The Panthers and Golden Knights are back in action tomorrow, April 10, in an NE-10 doubleheader slated to begin at 12 pm. Prior to game one, the Panthers will celebrate Senior Day.Â
