Softball Splits with Saint Rose on Senior Day

Garden City, N.Y. -- After dropping the opening game of a Sunday twinbill with the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights, 9-6, the Adelphi University softball team managed to earn a split of the afternoon's double-header behind a complete game shutout from Kristin Fealy, and took the weekend series 2-1. Prior to Sunday's action, the Panthers honored the lone member of their graduating class, Stephanie Barbaro, who started game one behind the plate.

Fealy bounced back from a rough outing on Friday against Southern Connecticut with her first complete game shutout of seven innings this season for Adelphi (22-14, 12-3 NE-10). She scattered five hits, five strikeouts and a walk in her outing to stymie the Golden Knight (8-18, 3-7 NE-10) bats that pounded out nine runs and 15 hits against Lindsay Mapes in game one. Danielle Cutuli and Krista King were responsible for the two Panther runs in game two, as they each recorded an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Brown and Gold. In total, King went 4-7 with two RBIs across the twinbill, while Brenna Martini went 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs in the game one setback, which included a three-run homer in the seventh inning.

Game 1
The Golden Knights scored three runs in each of the first two innings of game one to put the Panthers behind early. The visitors stroked three consecutive doubles, in what became a chain of five straight hits, off Mapes to open the first inning before she retired the final two batters to put an end to the opening frame. Adelphi had a chance to respond right away when King and Nicoletta Cuccio singled to begin the bottom of the frame, but Roma Mazzariello retired the next three batters to keep the Panthers from scoring.

Saint Rose loaded the bases against Mapes on a single, double and walk to begin the second, before another walk forced in a run and made it a 4-0 game. From there, the Golden Knights struck a pair of sacrifice flies to make it a 6-0 game, before Mapes retired the final hitter on a comebacker with a pair of runners on base.

A one-out walk to Cutuli and a double off the bat of Fallon McCarthy led to the first Adelphi run in the second, as King grounded out to break up the shutout and make it a 6-1 game. The Panthers added two more in the bottom of the third, as Martini singled and Nicole Camera doubled ahead of a Stephanie Staiano triple to halve the lead and make it 6-3. However, the Golden Knights struck back in the top of the fifth, as Zoe Dubois cracked a two-run homer off Jessica Vadala in relief to make it an 8-3 game, before they added another run off Camera in the sixth to make it 9-3.

Adelphi's rally in the seventh fell short, as King and Lauren Sandelier singled to begin the frame ahead of Martini's blast to center field that made it a three-run ballgame. However, Mazzariello rebounded to retire the next three batters and give the Golden Knights the victory.

Game 2
Fealy and Mazzariello matched zeros over the first three innings, as they allowed just four baserunners combined. The Panthers had a chance to strike first in the second, as Megan Lewis tripled with one out, but did not score, before Fealy worked around an error and a single in the third, and runners at the corners in the fourth, to keep the game scoreless.

With Martini on third and Camera on first with one out in the fifth, following a fielder's choice, wild pitch and a single, the Panthers seemed primed to break through as Nicole Wickham entered the game for Mazzariello. However, Wickham, the losing pitcher in the series opener on Saturday, induced a hard line drive from Lewis that found the mitt of Kayla Bancroft at first base who doubled off Camera to end the inning.

The Panthers wouldn't be denied in the next inning, however, as Staiano doubled to the left field gap and scored on Cutuli's single through the right side to make it a 1-0 game. After Cutuli was moved into scoring position by Fallon McCarthy and to third by Christina Palmenteri, King delivered with the two-out single up the middle to make it a 2-0 contest. That was all the offense Fealy needed, as she induced a big 1-6-3 double play in the sixth with the tying run at the plate, and worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh to finish with a flourish, as she struck out the last batter to face her.

The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, April 13 when they travel to the University of New Haven for a 3 pm double-header.

NOTES
- Martini leads the NE-10 in three offensive categories: average, home runs and RBIs.
