Rindge, N.H. – A rally in the ninth inning helped the Adelphi University baseball team earn a 4-3 victory a third-ranked Franklin Pierce and earn a split of today's doubleheader. The Ravens won the opener 5-3 during a Northeast-10 Conference cross-divisional matchup.
Four players notched three hits on the day for the Panthers (15-12/5-4 NE-10) that included
Tyler Murphy,
Kory Cassara,
Brandon Morse, and
Michael Stack. Stack also drove in two runs while
Brandon Morse scored twice.
Game One
The Ravens (26-3/8-1 NE-10) scored five unanswered runs from the fourth through sixth innings that included a two-run homerun from Jay Jabs to start the scoring in the fourth. Justin Brock, who scored on the Jabs' homerun, doubled in two runs in the fifth to increase the lead to 4-0 before Matt Burns logged a RBI single in the sixth.
Looking to start a rally,
Kory Cassara led off the seventh inning with solo homerun to straightaway left field for the first run of the game for the Panthers.
Alex Zykoff scored later in the inning on a groundout after originally reaching on a fielding error.
Michael Stack followed with a RBI single to score
Tyler Warshefskie and bring the deficit to 5-3 after the top of the seventh.
However, after recording one out in the seventh, Tanner Putnam struck out five throughout his 2.1 innings of work to earn his first save of the season and close out the 5-3 win for the Ravens. Anthony Matarazzo earned the victory by going 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts.
Stack, Cassara, and Warshefskie each tallied two hits for the Brown and Gold in the effort while
Zack Levinson picked up two walks.
Michael Demarest kept Adelphi within reach during the later innings by tossing three innings of shutout relief that featured four strikeouts and just one allowed hit.
Game Two
Following Franklin Pierce taking a 3-2 lead in the eighth, the Panthers rallied in the ninth inning to deliver the first conference loss of the season for the Ravens.
John Cuttitta came on to pinch run for Murphy after the senior led the inning off with single. Cuttitta made his way to third after a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt from
Ray Triano. With a runner on third, Morse doubled the left field line to tie the game at 3-3. Morse later scored the go-ahead run by coming home on a wild pitch to lift the Panthers.
Stack gave the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a RBI groundout to score Morse. The Ravens responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 2-1 lead on a Chris LaVorgna two-run single. Adelphi tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth as
Robert Vani scored on a fielding error with the bases loaded.
LaVorgna again gave the home team the lead with a RBI triple in the eighth prior to the Panthers taking the lead in the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth,
Steven Kuhn closed out the inning and picked up the win after tossing 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
TJ Santiago struck out 11 throughout 7.2 innings of work after getting the start in the nightcap.

Adelphi continues its trip tomorrow afternoon with a 12:00 pm doubleheader at Southern New Hampshire.

- The Ravens are atop of the latest NCBWA East Regional Poll in addition to being third in the National Poll. The Panthers ranked ninth in the latest Region Poll.
