Garden City, N.Y. -
Michael Stack and
Brandon Morse each hit sent balls over the fence, helping power the Adelphi University baseball team past Southern Connecticut State (8-13-1, 1-4 NE-10), 6-4 this afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
The Panthers (14-11, 3-2 NE-10) Jonathan Mulford threw eight innings, striking out 10 and giving up four runs, earning his second win of the season, while his counterpart, Jason Harper was roughed up in six innings of work, giving up six and striking out just two.
The Brown and Gold took control early, scoring all six of their runs in the first four innings of the contest. Stack was the first Panther to strike, hitting a ball over the fence down the right field line for a one out home run, 1-0. Adelphi's next two runs came just an inning later when Zach Levinson stroked a double, scoring
Brett Malm and
Kory Cassara, while moving to third on the throw. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not drive Levinson home, but the damage was done, 3-0.
The third inning passed without incident, but in the fourth Adelphi added three more runs, building a 6-0 lead. The first run of the inning was another offering from Levinson, this time a sacrifice fly that plated Malm. The Panthers final two runs came off Morse's bat, thanks to a home run over the wall in left center that scored
Michael Cattani.
Adelphi was seemingly in control until an Owl rally in the top of the fifth. Southern Conecticut State touched up Mulford, scoring four runs on five hits. The fourth run scored on an RBI single and left runners on first and second. However, Mulford responded by striking out the next batter swinging to end the threat and retake control of the game. He then set the visitors down in order in the sixth and faced just four batters in the seventh and eighth innings.
Steven Kuhn came on in relief in the ninth and set the order down in order, thanks in part to a 463 double play, earning his third save of the season.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 9 in Rindge, New Hampshire when they play a double dip with the host Ravens of Franklin Pierce University.
