Softball Drops a Pair to Southern Connecticut, 2-0 and 11-3

New Haven, Conn. -- After sweeping the Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Janet L. Ficke Field a fortnight ago, the Adelphi University softball team traveled to New Haven to take on the Owls in a second Southwest Division Northeast-10 doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Owls took both ends of the twinbill on their home field, 2-0 and 11-3, to even the season series and hand the Panthers their first two divisional losses of the season.

A double off the bat of Nicole Camera was the only hit for Adelphi (20-13, 10-3 NE-10) in the opening game, as SCSU's (7-18, 2-7 NE-10) Kelsey Cockrill outdueled Linday Mapes. In game two, Krista King went 3-3 at the plate with a run scored as the only Adelphi player to record more than one hit.

Game 1
The Owls scored a pair of runs off Mapes in the second inning that proved to be the difference in the contest. Audrey Dolloff singled to leadoff and scored on a Catherine Ursillo triple. Leanna Feerick then walked, stole second, and came around to score on a Samantha Groskritz single for the second run of the game before Groskritz was caught stealing to end the inning. That was all Cockrill needed, as she retired 15 of the next 18 batters she faced and fanned five over the seven innings.

Camera's one-out double broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth, and Stephanie Staiano walked with two outs to put the tying runs on base. However, Cockrill rebounded by striking out Danielle Cutuli to end Adelphi's best chance to tie the game.

Game 2
After Adelphi was unable to take advantage of a two on with one out scenario in the top of the inning, the Owls' bats hit Kristin Fealy hard in the bottom of the frame to open game two, as she surrendered five runs on five hits -- included a three-run homer to Giuliana D'Archangelo -- without surrendering an out before being replaced by Jessica Vadala. Vadala settled things down somewhat, as she recorded two outs before giving up an RBI single to Victoria Ceballos that closed out the home team's six-spot in the opening inning.

Adelphi had its chances in the ensuing innings early, but were unable to cash in. Staiano led off the second with a single, but was not brought home, while a double off the bat of Brenna Martini put both her and Krista King in scoring position with one out in the third but neither crossed home plate.

After Vadala surrendered a pair of singles to lead off the third, she departed the circle in favor of Camera. From there, the Owls added four more runs as they stroked three hits and took advantage of three walks and an error to increase their lead to 10-0 before Camera retired the side. SCSU added one more in the fourth on a leadoff home run by Holly Noe to make it an 11-0 affair before Adelphi came to bat for the final time.

In the fifth, Christina Palmenteri led off with a single, stole second and arrived on third after a wild pitch. After King singled to the infield, two errors in the field for the Owls led to two Adelphi runs, befor a bases-loaded walk issued to Danielle Cutuli forced in the third run. However, Adelphi was unable to extend the game and fell to the run-rule one batter later.

The Panthers open a three-game series with Saint Rose tomorrow, April 9, with a single game slated to begin at 11 am due to an inclement forecast.

NOTES
- King has hit safely in eight of the last nine games and has raised her average to .342 to rank second on the team.
- Prior to today's opener, Martini had driven in a run in six straight games.
