Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. -- A two-run home run off the bat of
Megan Lewis capped a four-run first inning for the Adelphi University softball team on Wednesday afternoon, and proved to be the different in a Northeast-10 Conference game that the Panthers held on to win by a 4-3 final.
Lewis smacked her fourth homer of the season to close out the Adelphi (20-11, 10-1 NE-10) scoring in the first inning before Pace (15-10, 8-3 NE-10) even came to the plate. As a team, Adelphi recorded six hits but had a total of 13 baserunners due to seven walks;
Nicoletta Cuccio was the only Panther to pick up more than one hit against Setter pitching, as she went 2-2 with two walks and a run scored.
Brenna Martini and
Nicole Camera were responsible for the other two Adelphi runs, picking up RBIs in the first inning.
After
Krista King and Cuccio worked out walks to lead off the game and advanced on a wild pitch, Martini singled through the left side to bring in the first run of the game. Camera then few out to center for the first out of the inning, but that brought in Cuccio from third on the sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. From there, Lewis homered to left to cap the inning and force a Pace pitching change just 0.1 innings into the game.
All the scoring for both teams took place in the first three innings, and the Setters rallied for one run off of
Lindsay Mapes in the bottom of the frame. A pair of doubles from the first two hitters led to a run on an RBI groundout in the first, before Mapes retired the final two hitters to end the inning. Both teams got two runners aboard in inning two, but neither side was able to take advantage of the opportunity to score.
Trailing 4-1 in the third inning, Pace's Samantha Lima came to the plate after Surina Sandhu singled to first, and she responded with a two-run shot of her own over the left-field fence, to in two runs to make it a 4-3 game. However, the pitching locked down for both teams after the third, and neither team was able to score a run the rest of the way.
Pace had a chance to rally for the win in their last at bats, as a walk and a hit batter put the tying and winning runs on base in the seventh. Mapes was up to the task, however, and induced a ground ball from Lima for a double play to end the game.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, April 8 with a double-header against Southern Connecticut State beginning at 2 pm in New Haven.
NOTES- With today's home run, Lewis ranks second behind Martini for the team lead.
- Martini has registered at least one RBI in nine of the past 10 games.
