Baseball Celebrates Senior Day With Sweep Of New Haven, 4-2

Garden City, N.Y. - Two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning helped the Adelphi University baseball team upend New Haven 4-2 earlier this afternoon. In the process, the Panthers (20-19/10-9 NE-10) completed the three-game Northeast-10 Conference series sweep of the Chargers (13-16/6-8 NE-10) after two wins yesterday.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth inning with the game tied at 2-2, Robert Vani reached on a dropped fly ball in the outfield that allowed the junior to touch third base. In the next at-bat, Alex Zykoff flied out down the left field line that allowed Vani to score and push the Brown and Gold ahead 3-2. Zack Levinson added an insurance run later in the inning with a RBI single through the right side to score Steven Withers.

Michael Demarest earned his third save of the weekend in the ninth by a ground out, a pop out, and a fly out after walking the leadoff batter. Jonathan Iadevaia made a diving catch in shallow center field to record the final out and secure the victory for Matthew O'Connor. The southpaw moves to 3-3 on the season after logging eight innings of work that included seven strikeouts and one earned run.

Levinson led the offense with three of the team's six hits on the afternoon while Withers scored a pair of runs. Nick Perrelli and TJ Riccio each contribued two hits for the Chargers while Jack Zagaja scored and drove in a run.

New Haven scored the first run of the game as Zagaja placed a two-out double in right center to score Perrelli. Ray Triano scored an unearned run in the third to tie the game for Adelphi as Iadevaia reached on an error. Each team scored a run in the fourth to push the game to 2-2 as Zagaja scored on a sacrifice fly for the Chargers before Withers stole third base and was granted the tying run on fielder's interference in the bottom of the inning.

Prior to the start of today's game, Jonathon Mulford, Tyler Murphy, Ray Triano, and Alex Zykoff were honored as the 2016 Senior Class with a pregame ceremony.
