Long Ball Helps Baseball Towards 8-3 Victory Against Pace

Garden City, N.Y. - A pair of three-run home runs aided the Adelphi University baseball team to an 8-3 victory against Pace this afternoon during a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division matchup.

Robert Vani and Alex Zykoff were repsonsible for the two home runs, scoring six of the Panthers' (21-19/11-9 NE-10) eight runs on just two hits. Steven Withers and Eric Hassell each scored a pair of runs while Vani and Zykoff each drove in four runs on the afternoon.

The Setters (24-17/10-10 NE-10) scored a run in the top of the first without recording a hit as John Kukura reached on an error and later scored during a ground out from Michael Gulino. The Brown and Gold quickly responded in the bottom half as Vani scored Withers with a sacrifice fly to right field.

A run in each the fourth and fifth innings allowed Pace to create a 3-1 margin. Nick LoBello doubled home a run in the fourth followed by Garrett De Lotto single to left center to score Andrew Coffey.

A walk to Michael Stack and a pair of one out walks to Withers and Hassell loaded the bases with Adelphi trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Zykoff plated Stack with a sacrifice fly to right center, cutting the deficit to 3-2. In the next at-bat, Vani drove a 1-0 pitch to left center to clear the bases and put the Panthers ahead 5-3. Zykoff increased the advantage to 8-3 two innings later with the second three-run homerun of the game to score Jonathan Iadevaia and Hassell.

Michael Demarest, coming off being named the NE-10 Rookie of the Week, earned the victory in relief behind 2.1 innings of work that included a strikeout. Jonathon Mulford and TJ Santiago closed out the win with an inning each that also featured a strikeout from each.

Adelphi returns to action this weekend with a three-game series in Albany against Saint Rose, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Notes:
- Adelphi and Pace move into a tie in the Southwest Division standings at 9-5. Meanwhile, Saint Rose stands at 7-3 in the division after defeating American International 2-1 earlier today.
