Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University softball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference contests to the Le Moyne College Dolphins on Saturday, falling in a walk-off 4-3 before dropping the nightcap 4-2 to begin the final series of the year.
Brenna Martini hit her NE-10 leading 13th home run of the season in the opener, while
Megan Lewis drove in Adelphi's (27-18, 17-6 NE-10) third run in the first game with a sixth-inning, bases-loaded single. In game two, the Panthers got a run in the first and second off the bats of
Nicole Camera and
Christina Palmenteri, but again saw the Dolphins (28-14, 14-7 NE-10) rally late for the win.Â
Game 1
After
Krista King singled to lead off the game, Martini's one-out blast put the Panthers on top for the first time on the day. That 2-0 lead held for
Lindsay Mapes until the third inning, when the Dolphins halved the deficit with their first run, before they eventually tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth as a ball never left the infield;Â Courtney Case reached on a bunt single with one out, stole second and then scored on a two-out infield single by Kelly Mascari.
However, Adelphi bounced back to reclaim the lead in the sixth, as
Nicoletta Cuccio and Martini walked to lead off the inning and set the table. From there, Camera singled to right field to load the bases, before Lewis stroked an infield single of her own to the second baseman to drive in Cuccio.
However, the Dolphins scored a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh for the come from behind, walk off win. In the seventh, Mascari led off with a double to left center and then was replaced at second by pinch-runner Lauren Floyd. Panther miscues led to the game-winner, as Floyd moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run as Lauren Zazzaro reached on a dropped fly ball.
Game 2
Adelphi again struck in the first to take an early lead as Camera drove in Martini on an infield single, but the Dolphins responded with two off
Kristin Fealy to claim the lead in the bottom of the frame. Undaunted, the Panthers responded to knot the game at 2-2 in the top of the second, after
Stephanie Staiano reached on an error and was sacrificed to second and third. Palmenteri delivered with a two-out single to left to tie things up, and the score remained that way for the next three innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Dolphins plated a pair of runs which proved to be the difference in the game. Two errors and a passed ball led to the scoring for the Dolphins, as both runs that crossed the plate turned out to be unearned. Adelphi's best chance to equalize came in the top of the sixth, as they had runners at the corners, but nothing came of the opportunity.Â
The Panthers return to action in the final game of a three-game set tomorrow at 12 pm. With a victory, the Panthers clinch the top seed in the Southwest Division for the NE-10 Tournament.
