Syracuse, N.Y. -- Leading 3-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Adelphi University softball team saw the Le Moyne College Dolphins stage a furious comeback rally to score five runs and claim a 6-3 victory to sweep the weekend series on Sunday.
Adelphi (27-19, 17-7 NE-10), who would've claimed the top seed and hosting duties for the Northeast-10 Championship with a victory, will instead be the No. 3 seed in next week's championship. The Dolphins claim the No. 2 seed and championship weekend will be held on the campus of the Pace University Setters. The Panthers will play the No. 4 seeds, the University of New Haven, in Tuesday's first round.
Both teams traded zeros over the first four innings as
Lindsay Mapes allowed just one hit to the Dolphins and the combination of Toni Secreti and Alexis Eastman worked around a total of five Adelphi baserunners. However, it was the Panthers who struck first in the fifth, as
Christina Palmenteri stroked her second home run of the season to lead off and make it a 1-0 game. The Panthers added their second run later in the inning, as
Nicoletta Cuccio walked and
Nicole Camera drove her in with a two-out triple to make it 2-0.
Le Moyne, who already won the first game of the weekend series in a walkoff, nabbed a run in the bottom of the inning with two outs, as Allison Reynolds -- who reached on a fielder's choice -- stole second and came around to score on Kelly Mascari's single. However, Adelphi got the run back in the top of the sixth when
Stephanie Staiano led off with a single and came around to score on a triple by
Danielle Cutuli, but the Panther shortstop was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the throw.Â
After having two baserunners in the sixth, the Dolphins rallied for the win in their last at bats for the second day in a row. Lauren Zazzaro led off with a walk becoming quickly coming around to score on Reynolds' first-pitch double. After
Kristin Fealy entered in relief with the tying runner in scoring position, she retired Mascari with a pop up to first base for the first out. Adelphi was undone from there, as Sabrina Riley reached on an error that brought the tying run around, but Fealy was one out away from forcing extras after Andrews grounded out.Â
However, the Dolphins went home happy in the next at bat, as Mackenzie Dreher parked a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to cap the five-run rally and give Le Moyne the sweep.Â
