Worcester, Mass. -- A combined 12 goals off the sticks of
Rachel O'Brien,
Jacqueline Jahelka and
Emily Keesling led the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to an 18-3 victory over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon, as senior goalkeeper
Taylor Hayes picked up her 54th career win in net -- a new program record.
O'Brien's 10 points behind four goals and six assists paced the Panther offense (14-0, 11-0 NE-10) as she, Jahelka and Keesling notched four goals apiece;
Danielle Montano was the other Panther to net more than one point, as she recorded a goal and an assist. Abreu and Michele Scanell each won four draw controls for the Brown and Gold, while
Jen Graham caused a pair of turnovers and picked up two ground balls on defense. Hayes made five stops in net in nearly 52 minutes of action to cement herself in the Adelphi record books.
The Panthers scored the first nine goals of the game, which included three of the stick of Jahelka, two each from O'Brien and Keesling, and one from
Kate Beier and
Chelsea Abreu, to lead 9-0 with 9:15 left in the first. Assumption freshman Krista Iwanicki finally broke through Hayes in goal to get the Greyhounds on the board with 6:34 remaining, before O'Brien and Keesling scored the final two goals of the half to push the edge to 11-1 -- with Keesling's coming with just four ticks left on the clock.Â
Beth Ann Pierce scored for the Panthers just 1:21 into the second half which kicked off a 5-1 scoring run for the Panthers that saw them lead 16-2 off Scanell's first tally with 10:33 remaining. After Jen McDonald scored on a free position opportunity for the Blue and White, Montano and
Jill Graziano closed out the scoring with 7:01 and 5:47 left in the game, respectively, to end it with an 18-3 final.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, April 27th, when they host the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University at 6 pm.
