Garden City, N.Y. - On a day in which Adelphi University honored alumni from the baseball program, the current team took both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference Divisional doubleheader from New Haven, 6-4 and 3-1.
Alex Zykoff totaled three RBI throughout both games for the Panthers (19-19/9-9 NE-10) that included three hits and a run scored.
Steven Withers added four hits and two RBI as the Brown and Gold collected 20 hits on the afternoon.
Game One
Both team scored a pair of runs in the opening inning, as the Chargers (13-15/6-8 NE-10) struck first with a RBI single from Robert Petrillo followed up later on sacrifice fly from PJ Contreras to score Nick Perrelli. Adelphi quickly responded
Robert Vani drove in
Kory Cassara with sacrifice fly followed by
Jonathan Iadevaia scoring on an
Eric Hassell groundout.
In the next inning, the Panthers grabbed the 3-2 lead as Vani secured his second RBI in as many innings with a single to score Cassara again. However, two runs on four hits in the fifth inning allowed New Haven to reclaim the advantage at 4-3.
After a scoreless sixth, Zykoff recorded both of his RBI in the seventh and afford Adelphi a 5-4 lead with a double on the left field line, scoring Vani and Iadevaia. The senior scored in the next at-bat as Withers drove a single to right center.
Michael Demarest struck out two and produced a fly ball to record his first save of the season, giving the win to
Ed Baram after the freshman came in for 1.2 innings of work and not allowing a hit or walk.
Jonathon Mulford started the contest, throwing 6.1 innings that included nine strikeouts.
Game Two
A scoreless tie through the first inning, both teams scored one in the second inning of the nightcap. Andrew Garcia produced the lone run of the game for the Chargers with a RBI double. Wither's second RBI of the day in the day in the bottom of the second tied the game as the single scored Vani.
The Panthers took the lead in the fourth innings as
Michael Stack scored
Tyler Warshefskie with a single up the middle followed by an insurance run in the seventh on a single from Zykoff.
The second run produced by Stack was all
TJ Santiago needed as the started earned his fifth win of the season with seven innings of work behind seven strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
David Butler relieved Santiago in the eighth, coming up with a crucial double play on a bunt attempt at
Brett Malm tagged the runner out at third and tossed across the diamond to finish off the 1-5-3 double play.
For the second time on the day, Demarest struck out two in the ninth and recorded his second save to give the Brown and Gold the victory.
Notes:
- In between games today, Adelphi recognized several alumni with ceremony that included honoring the 1996 and 1997 teams.
- Currently, the Panthers sit in third place of the Southwest Division with a 7-5 mark.
