Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Adelphi Athletics

Third Quarter Lull Hurts #5 Men's Lacrosse in Loss to #10 NYIT, 12-7

John McGrath kept the Panthers in the game, tying a career-high with 14 saves.

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The fifth ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team trailed #10 NYIT by the score of 5-4, but found themselves in a hole they were unable to overcome after being outscored, 3-0 in the third quarter, eventually falling by the score of 12-7 in Old Westbury, New York this afternoon.

The Panthers (11-3) were kept in the game thanks to the efforts of John McGrath and John English. McGrath tied a career-high with 14 stops, while English won 21 of the 22 face-offs in the game and picked up a game-high 18 ground balls. The Brown and Gold defense also put forth a strong effort, forcing six NYIT (10-3) turnovers, led by Joe Giardina and Joseph Catalanotti, who caused two turnovers each.

The Adelphi offense were unable to solve the puzzle presented by the Bears Alex Seltzer, who made a game-high 19 saves. Anthony Gomes was the only member of the Panthers attacking unit to put a ripple in the NYIT net more then once, with two goals. Gordon Purdie, Jr., Salvataore Tuttle, Cory Stavis, Shane Deboer and Paul Bentz were each credited with one goal.

The first quarter was a back and forth affair as the host Bears sandwiched their two goals around two Adelphi tallies that came from Tuttle and Gomes. NYIT's second and final goal of the first stanza came with just 1:40 left and moved the contest into the second period knotted at two.

The Bears opened the scoring in the second quarter just 42 seconds into play, but Bentz responded at the 8:45 mark to tie the game for the second time, 3-3. NYIT did not wait long to answer, finding the back of the Adelphi net 12 seconds later, pulling in front again, 4-3.

Just over two minutes later Deboer would power the ball past Seltzer for Adelphi's fourth goal of the game, tying the match-up at four all with 6:11 on the game clock. However, that goal would start an Adelphi goal drought that lasted more then 21 minutes and when it was finally ended by Gomes 17 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Panthers found themselves in a three goal hole, 8-5.

NYIT responded to Gomes' goal with a three tally spurt, taking their largest lead of the game, 11-5 with 8:53 left to play. The Panthers would score twice more in the final eight minutes, including a man down goal from Stavis, but it was not enough, falling 12-7.

Adelphi travels to Syracuse, New York this Saturday, April 23 to close out the regular season against national number two Le Moyne College at 12:30 pm.

Notes:
- The home team has won each of the last six meetings between Adelphi and NYIT. The last time a road team earned a win was on April 12, 2008 when NYIT earned a 12-11 win over the Panthers at their temporary home, Hofstra University.
- NYIT topped Adelphi 11-6 in Old Westbury in 2014, but the Brown and Gold bounced back and won the Northeast-10 Conference championship and advanced to the Final Four.
- John English is just eight ground balls from tying the program record of 166 in a single season, set by Gregory Puskuldjian in 2014.
