Long Ball Powers Softball to Split with Saint Anselm

Manchester, N.H. -- Three home runs powered the Adelphi University softball team to a 7-0 game one victory against the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers eventually split a Northeast-10 Conference double header with the hosts after dropping game two, 6-2.

Nicole Camera's four RBIs led Adelphi (19-11, 9-1 NE-10) on the day, as she smacked a three-run homer over the right field fence in the Brown and Gold's five-run fifth inning in game one and drove in the Panthers' first run of game two. Also going deep in Adelphi's game one win were Brenna Martini and Megan Lewis; Martini also scored a pair of Adelphi runs, while Nicoletta Cuccio was the only Panther to record multiple hits in game one, as she went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI to account for a pair of the Panthers' nine hits. In the game two setback, Krista King went 2-3 at the top of the lineup and scored both Panther runs.

Game 1
Sam Hennequin stymied the Adelphi offense for the first four innings of game one, as she no hit the Panthers to match zeros with Lindsay Mapes -- who allowed just one hit over the first four frames herself and worked around four walks.

Danielle Cutuli broke up the no-hitter with a single back to Hennequin to lead off the fifth, before getting moved into scoring position by Fallon McCarthy. From there, King singled back up the middle with two outs with two outs to finally put a run on the board. After King stole second, Nicoletta Cuccio doubled her home to make it a 2-0 game, before Martini walked and Camera parked her third home run of the season over the fence to close out the five-run inning.

The Hawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame on a walk, an error and a single with one out, but Mapes responded by striking out the next two hitters -- one looking and one swinging -- to get out of the jam and keep the shutout in tact.

Adelphi tacked on two in the seventh, as Martini led off the inning with a shot to center field, and Lewis followed up one out later with her own solo shot to left center. After Mapes recorded her fourth and final strikeout of Amanda Bickford, Jessica Vadala entered the game in relief and recorded the final two outs of the inning to end the game.

Game 2
Adelphi got on top early after King led off the game with a single and Martini walked ahead of Camera's single to left field that made it a 1-0 game. Adelphi's quest for more in the opening frame was ended, however, as Arika Brochu got Lewis to ground into a double play to close out the top of the first.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases with one out after a hit batter, a single and a walk. A fielder's choice tied the game for the home team, but Kristin Fealy retired Megan Murrell on a fly out to right field to strand a pair of runners.

Stephanie Staiano led off the second inning with a single and was in scoring position with one out, but the Panthers were unable to bring her around to score; in the bottom of the inning, the Hawks took their first lead of game after loading the bases with none out. Bickford singled to left center to drive in two, but Fealy retired the next three hitters to limit the damage to a 3-1 deficit. The Hawks tacked on a run off of Camera, who entered in relief in the fourth, as the first four hitters of the inning reached base, to increase their lead to 4-1.

King led off with a single in the fifth and found herself on third after an error, and duly came around to score on Lauren Sandelier's sacrifice fly to right to make it a 4-2 game. However, that was the last run the Panthers would score in the game, and a two-run homer off the bat of Michaela Criscione put the game away in the bottom of the frame to make it a 6-2 game.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, April 5 when they travel to Pace University for a single NE-10 game at 3:30 pm.

NOTES
- With the Panthers' loss in game two, no NE-10 team is undefeated in conference play.
- Mapes and Fealy lead the team with nine wins apiece.
- Martini's nine home runs and 35 RBIs lead the NE-10.
