Southern Connecticut Outlasts Baseball, 8-6

New Haven, Conn. - A five-run fifth proved to be enough as Southern Connecticut State upended the Adelphi University baseball team 8-6 earlier this afternoon during a Northeast-10 Conference game.

Five straight one-out singles highlighted the fifth inning for the Owls (10-20-1/3-11 NE-10) and helped take a 7-3 lead. Jake DeRosa capped off the scoring with sacrifice fly to center before Michael Tarpey came on to close out the final out of the inning.

McNeill Finnegan led the home team with three hits while Jake DeRosa drove in three runs. Steve Withers led the Brown and Gold (17-18/7-9 NE-10) with two RBI as four individuals collected four hits including Jonathan Iadevaia and Robert Vani scoring a pair of runs each. Jason Harper earned his fourth victory of the year for the Owls by tossing seven innings with two strikeouts.

Southern Connecticut claimed a 2-0 advantage in the second inning after DeRosa doubled to left center to plate two runs. After Eric Hassell brought the score to 2-1 in the third on a RBI single, Vani stole home to even the game at 2-2. Following the five-run fifth for the Owls, another run in the sixth increased the advantage to 8-3 Ethan Joyce scored on an error in the outfield.

Looking to create a comeback in the eighth, Iadevaia created a walk with one out followed by back-to-back single from Vani and Hassell. A third straight single from Alex Zykoff drove in Iadevaia while Vani cross home plate on a bases loaded walk to Tyler Murphy. With the bases still loaded and two outs on the board, Withers drove in both his runs on the afternoon with a single to score Zykoff and Hassell. A strikeout ended the threat for the Panthers followed by a strikeout and two fly outs from Shawn Urbano in the ninth to earn his first save.

Adelphi returns to William J. Bonomo Field tomorrow afternoon for a non-league contest against Felician. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

Notes:
- The Panthers were 3-0 against Southern Connecticut prior to today.
- Adelphi looks for revenge tomorrow after falling to Felician 8-1 last week.
