Garden City, N.Y. --
Lindsay Mapes threw a two-hit shut out in game one to lead the Adelphi University softball team to a split against the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon in its regular-season finale at Motamed Field. The Panthers won game one by a 5-0 final before they fell 8-3 in the nightcap.
Brenna Martini's two-run single in the third was the highlight of the first game for the Panthers (27-16, 17-4 NE-10), as the sophomore went 1-1 at the plate across both games while working out six walks.
Nicole Camera and
Fallon McCarthy also drove in a run for the Panthers in game one, while
Krista King scored twice at the top of the lineup.
Lauren Sandelier was the only Panther to get two hits in game two, as she went 2-4 with a run scored as McCarthy and
Christina Palmenteri also crossed the plate for Adelphi.Â
Game 1Â
The Panthers scratched out the first run of the game in the bottom of the first without a hit off New Haven starter Nicole King, as
Krista King walked,
Nicoletta Cuccio was hit by a pitch and Martini walked as well ahead of Camera's RBI fielder's choice.
While that was more than enough for Mapes on the afternoon, she got out of her only spot of trouble in the third as a single and an error put Chargers at the corners with no one out. However, from there, Mapes got a strikeout and two popouts to strand the runners, and Adelphi saw its lead expand to 4-0 at the close of the third inning. After Palmenteri and King singled, Martini drove them both in with a one-out single to deep left field, which was then kicked away by the Chargers' left fielder to allow Martini to advance to second. After Camera singled to shortstop but Martini was thrown out on the bases, Camera found herself on third after New Haven's catcher threw away a pickoff attempt for the second Charger miscue of the inning. She'd late score on a passed ball to close out the inning with Adelphi leading by four runs. Adelphi's fifth run came courtesy of
Stephanie Staiano's leadoff double in the fourth, as she later came around to score on a McCarthy RBI groundout.
Mapes allowed just three baserunners in the ensuing four innings, with only one reaching scoring position. She finished her effort with a flourish, striking out the final two New Haven hitters to preserve the shutout victory.
Game 2
Charger freshman Taylor Luzzi had herself a day in game two, as she drove in five runs on a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Two of her three hits in the game went for extra bases including her third double of the season and her second home run, a two-run blast in the sixth inning that eventually decided the game.
The Chargers got on the board early in game two, and never faced a deficit from there. Marissa Colby singled deep to third base with one out in the first, took second on a throwing error and third on a passed ball. She scored on an RBI groundout for the first of four unearned runs surrendered by
Kristin Fealy on the afternoon, as the freshman did not allow an earned run across her outing.
The Panthers briefly tied things up in the bottom of the first, as Sandelier's one-out single put her on base and she advanced to second on a wild pitch. A fielder's choice brought her to third, and
Megan Lewis cashed in with a single to right field to tie the game at 1-1. However, New Haven took the lead back in the second after Fealy struck out the first two batters, as two singles and an error led to the second Charger run. After Colby walked, Luzzi delivered her first blow, as she doubled to right center to score two and open the lead to 4-1.Â
Sandelier was again in the middle of it for Adelphi in the second, as McCarthy walked and Palmenteri was hit by a pitch to begin the inning which saw Sandelier single up the middle to score Palmenteri with two outs. With King and Sandelier in scoring position, the Panthers had a chance to tie -- but New Haven intentionally walked Martini to get to Camera, and Victoria Cabral won the battle for the Chargers by inducing the groundout. Adelphi crept closer still in the fourth, as McCarthy and Palmenteri singled and King walked to load to bases with nobody out. However, the Chargers got a big double play off the bat of Sandelier, which did score a run for the Brown and Gold but halted their momentum. Two walks to Martini and Camera loaded the bases again, but Cabral struck Lewis out to keep the Panthers trailing by a run, 4-3.
Camera entered the game in the circle for Fealy in the fifth, and surrendered a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to allow the Charger lead to expand to five runs, 8-3. Luzzi delivered the final blow in the sixth, as she whacked a two-run homer deep over the left field fence to make it an 8-3 game. Although Adelphi put two runners on in the sixth, they were unable to score and the game was called shortly after due to darkness.Â
The Panthers return to action on Friday, April 22 when they travel to Le Moyne College for the first game of a three-game series at 3 pm.
NOTES
- With one series remaining in the regular season, the Panthers hold a two-game lead over Pace for the top seed in the Southwest Division.
