Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Adelphi Athletics

#1 Women's Lacrosse Second Half Surge Downs the Second Ranked Dolphins, 10-7

Garden City, N.Y. - The top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team used an 8-4 second half surge to overcome a 3-2 halftime deficit and down #2 Le Moyne College, 10-7 in a battle of unbeatens on Motamed Field tonight.

The Panthers (13-0, 10-0 NE-10) were led by Jacqueline Jahelka and Rachel O'Brien, who both scored four points on two goals and two assists. Michelle Scannell and Emily Keesling contributed a total of five points combined -- Scannell on two goals and a helper and Keesling on two tallies. Kate Beier and Rachel Aitkens rounded out Adelphi's scoring with one goal each. The defensive effort was led by Ryley Weber, who caused three turnovers and held Le Moyne's top scorer, Erica Geremia scoreless with just one shot. Jen Graham and Scannell also had strong days on the defensive end, causing two turnovers of their own, while Jahelka, Beier, Danielle Montano, Kaitlyn Stackpole and Taylor Hayes forced one miscue each.

In addition, Weber led the Panthers in draw controls, winning four, while Camille Rosellini and Aitkens picked up two each and Stackpole gobbled up four ground balls. Hayes made five stops and picked up her 13th win of the year in goal, the 53rd win of her career, tying the program's all-time mark.

The first half was a defensive struggle. The Panthers had several chances early and either put them over the goal or were turned away by the Dolphins' Ryan Cortese, who made eight saves in the game. Adelphi's best early chance came off the stick of Aitkens, who beat her defender but her shot found the crossbar. Le Moyne (12-1, 9-1 NE-10) broke the stalemate at the 19:06 mark when Bryanna Fazio scored off a Vicki Graveline free position, then the Dolphins tacked on a second goal about 10 minutes later on a Maggie Monnat shot, 2-0. The two-goal deficit was the first time that Adelphi had trailed by two goals all season.

The Panthers responded with back-to-back goals from Jahelka and O'Brien, less then a minute apart to tie the game at 2-all with 6:18 left. Unfortunately, an Adelphi turnover in the final two minutes turned into a Le Moyne goal, giving the Dolphins a 3-2 halftime lead.

The second half started a lot quicker then the first with an exchange of goals just over four minutes into play that kept the visitors on top, 4-3. From there, Adelphi unleashed a three goal run, getting goals from Scannell, Beier and Aitkens in a span of less then five minutes to pull momemtum from Le Moyne and take a 6-4 lead with 20:24 remaining.

The Dolphins rallied, scoring two goals of their own to tie the game for the fourth time on the evening, 6-6 on a Jacqueline Pardee tally with 15:31 remaining. However it was all Adelphi from that point on, with the Panthers scoring four of the final five goals, including a goal from O'Brien off a free position feed from Jahelka to seal the win, 10-7.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. for a 1:00 pm game against Assumption.
