Garden City, N.Y. - A rally fell short for the Adelphi University baseball team this afternoon as American International claimed the Northeast-10 Conference contest 10-7 to take two out of three games this weekend.
Kory Cassara notched three hits to lead the Panthers (17-17/7-8 NE-10) this afternoon while
Alex Zykoff drove in two runs and scored a pair. Five different individuals collected two hits for the Yellow Jackets (8-27/3-17 NE-10) to make up the 14 on the day for the visitors.
The Brown and Gold built a 4-0 advantage on five hits in the first inning.
Jonathan Iadevaia started the rally with a one-out single followed by a single from
Robert Vani.
Eric Hassell made it three in a row to score Iadevaia before Zykoff tripled to right center to plate Vani and Hassell. The senior scored in the next at-bat on a single from
Brandon Morse.
American International quickly responded with a run in the second that started a streak of 10 unanswered runs for the Yellow Jackets. Karl Kapinos homered to right field to begin the run in the second followed by two runs on three hits in the third to cut the Panther lead to 4-3. Kapinos drove in the tying run in the fifth, the start of a four-run inning for American International.
After Kapinos tied the game at 4-4 with a RBI single to right field, the designated hitter scored later in the inning to give the Yellow Jackets the lead on a Josh Aviles' single. Two more runs in the frame extended the lead to 7-4 before the margin grew further with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to give AIC a 10-4 advantage.
Four hits in the eighth inning allowed Adelphi to cut into the lead starting with a
Camden Orologio RBI double.
Michael Stack matched Orologio in the next at-bat to cut the deficit to 10-6 before scoring on a
Steven Withers' single to make it 10-7. However, Eddie Ritch struck out one and produced two fly outs in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.
The Brown and Gold return to NE-10 Divisional action with a trip to New Haven, Conn. on Tuesday to face Southern Connecticut State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
Notes:
- Hassell has hit in five straight games, including three multi-hit performances.
- Today's 41 at-bats were the second most of the season for the Panthers.
