Three-Run Rally in the Ninth Earns Baseball Split Against AIC

Garden City, N.Y. -- After dropped game one 4-2 and trailing 4-2 headed to the ninth in game two, the Adelphi University baseball team rallied for three runs in the final inning to walk-off with a 5-4 win when pinch-hitter Alex Zykoff drove in John Fogarty for the win.

Michael Cattani drove in one of the two Adelphi (17-16, 7-7 NE-10) runs in the game one setback, courtesy of a sacrifice fly in the second, before drawing a walk in the sixth and seeing the second score on a wild pitch. Kory Cassara delivered a two-run double in the seventh of game two to get the rally started early, before driving in the tying run with a double in the ninth after Jonathan Iadevaia drove in a run with a groundout and prior to Zykoff's game-winner. Micahel Tarpey was the beneficiary of the Panther rally, as he pitched a scoreless top of the ninth with two strikeouts after working around two hits.

Game 1

After Michael Stack reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and was singled over to third by Zykoff, Cattani's deep flyout led to the first run of the afternoon for either side in the second inning of game one. However, the Yellow Jackets got a run in the third and the fifth off of Jonathon Mulford as Tyler Geffert delivered a pair of RBI singles to make it a 2-1 game in the middle innings.

From there, Adelphi momentarily tied things up in the sixth after Cassara was hit by a pitch leading off, was sacrificed to second and moved the third on a wild pitch. After Zykoff walked ahead of Cattani and stole second, the Panthers took advantage of Nick Kennedy's control issues by scoring the tying run on the second wild pitch of the inning.

Three singles and a walk, with a pickoff in between, led to another run for the Yellow Jackets in the seventh as they reclaimed the lead, before an RBI double off the bat of Geffert led to another run for the visitors in the top of the ninth. The Panthers nearly had a rally in them in the top of the ninth, as pinch-hitter Ray Triano reached on an error before the Brown and Gold were down to their final out. From there, Eric Hassell and Cassara singled to load the bases, but the Adelphi rally fell short as Zach Levinson lined out hard to shortstop to end the game.

Game 2
The Panthers trailed 3-0 after three innings and were again forced to fight from behind after the Yellow Jackets plated a run in the second and two in the third off TJ Santiago.

After Adelphi stranded three runners in scoring position over the first six innings, they broke the ice in the seventh when Lucas Terwilliger singled through the left side with one out ahead of consecutive doubles by Iadevaia and Cassara that plated two runs. The Yellow Jackets tacked on an insurance run, however, in the top of the eighth with two outs when a single and a double led to the fourth Yellow Jacket run.

With the Panthers down to their last at bats, Camden Orologio led off with a single and pinch runner Jordan Milo advanced to third on Terwilliger's double to set the table. Steven Withers pinch ran for Terwilliger and scored on Iadevaia's grounder. From there, Cassara tied the game with a double that scored Withers, and pinch-hitter Zykoff drove in pinch-runner Fogarty to complete the comeback.

The Panthers and Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow to close out the three-game series with the Yellow Jackets at 12 pm.

NOTES
- Both Adelphi starters went seven innings on the afternoon and threw over 100 pitches.
- The victory is Adelphi's first walk-off win of the season.
