Staiano's Grand Slam Powers Softball to Sweep of AIC, 9-4 and 4-3; Martini Sets Single-Season Home Run Record

Springfield, Mass. -- A grand slam off the bat of Stephanie Staiano in game one and a pair of solo home runs from Brenna Martini and Nicole Camera in game two powered the Adelphi University softball team to a sweep of the American International College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, 9-4 and 4-3.

Staiano's grand slam capped a five-run fifth for the Panthers (25-15, 15-4 NE-10) which proved to be the difference in game one, in which five different Panthers drove in a run. Camera paced the Panther offense as she went 6-7 at the plate across the two games, scoring four times and driving in two. Nicoletta Cuccio went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored in the opener, as she and Camera each had a multiple-hit game. Martini's 12th home run of the season not only tied the game at 3-3, but also gave her the program's single-season record, breaking Deandra Leo's mark of 11 from 2011.

Game 1
The Panthers were quick off the mark in the first two innings, as they scored a total of eight runs in support of Lindsay Mapes. After Krista King singled to lead off, Cuccio drove her in with a triple to right center ahead of Martini's double to straightaway center that made it a 2-0 game. After Camera was retired for the only time on the afternoon, Lewis singled to center to move Martini to third before Staiano walked and Martini scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.

Mapes responded by retiring the side in the bottom of the inning, before the Panthers went to work for five more runs in the second. Two one-out walks to Cuccio and Martini set the table for Camera's RBI double that scored Cuccio and made it 4-0. Lewis was hit by a pitch to load the bases ahead of Staiano, who cracked her second home run of the season for four RBIs to close the book on AIC's starter Jillian Bedard.

After a single, a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases for AIC in the bottom of the second, the Yellow Jackets (15-17, 8-11 NE-10) cashed in two runs against Mapes on two RBI groundouts to cut the lead to 8-2, but the Panthers tacked on another run in the top of the third when Lewis was again plunked with the bases loaded.

The score remained 9-2 in favor of the Panthers until the bottom of the sixth, when Jamie Mainez singled to lead off and Jordin Miller homered down the right field line to cut the deficit to 9-4. However, Mapes responded by retiring the side, and proceeded to strike out a pair in the seventh to end the game.

Game 2
Adelphi jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Camera singled, advanced to second on the the throw and scored on Lewis' RBI single. With Lewis and Staiano both in scoring position with one out, however, the Panthers were unable to score more as a pair of line outs ended the inning. The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the third, as a pair of runner reached on leadoff singles and scored uneared on an Adelphi throwing error with two outs.

The Panthers hit back for the first time in the top of the fourth as Camera led off with a triple but did not come around to score until Danielle Cutuli laid down a bunt single with two outs. However, the home team was not finished yet, as they reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff single, one-out double and two-out single off of Kristin Fealy, 3-2.

However, the Brown and Gold were powered to victory by Martini and Camera, who went back-to-back to start the sixth to tie the game and give the Panthers the lead and Martini the record. After Fealy stranded the tying run at second in the sixth, Mapes returned to pick up the save in the seventh as she too stranded the tying run in scoring position by striking Miller out to end the game.

The Panthers and Yellow Jackets are back in action for the series finale tomorrow at 12 pm.

NOTES
- Martini is nine RBIs shy of the single season RBI record of 57 from 2013, held by current assistant coach Victoria Wink ('15).
- Adelphi holds a one-game lead over Pace for the #1 spot in the Southwest Division.
