Pleasantville, N.Y. - Four runs in the top of the ninth inning, including the go-ahead RBI double from junior
Eric Hassell, helped propel the Adelphi University baseball team to a 5-1 win at Pace earlier today during a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game.
Tied at 1-1 going into the ninth,
Steven Withers led off the top of the ninth with a double followed by a single from
Robert Vani. With runners on the corners, Hassell drove a double to left center to put the Panthers (16-15/6-6 NE-10) ahead 2-1.
Alex Zykoff later pushed the lead to 5-1 with a two-out, three-run double after the bases were loaded when
Brett Malm was intentionally walked.
TJ Santiago picked up two groundouts and a pop up to
Michael Stack in the ninth to close out the victory in order.
Matthew O'Connor started the game, going seven shutout innings before handing the ball over to
Jonathon Mulford for eighth. Mulford earned his third victory of the season, needing just 12 pitches in the frame.
Hassell put the Brown and Gold on the board in the fourth with second homerun of the season, a solo homer. Pace tied the game in the eighth with a RBI single, one of two hits in the inning.
A 3-for-4 day from Hassell led the day for Adelphi to go along with his two RBI and two runs. Zykoff added two hits to three RBI.
Looking ahead, the Panthers welcome American International for a three-game series this weekend. A doubleheader is on the docket for Saturday, starting at 12:00 pm.
Notes:
- With his his in the ninth, Vani reached 100 for his career.
- Mulford moves into a five-way tie for seventh for wins in Adelphi history with 18 career victories.
