Pleasantville, N.Y. -- With nine seconds left in regulation and the score tied 12-12, senior
Salvatore Tuttle fired his fourth goal of the game into the back of the net to lead the Adelphi University men's lacrosse team, ranked #4 in the the latest USILA Division II national poll, past the Pace University Setters on Tuesday night.
Tuttle was one of eight different players to score for Adelphi (10-2, 8-1 NE-10) on the night, as
Cory Stavis and
Paul Bentz each net a pair. Also scoring for the Panthers were
Gerard Cunningham,
Gordon Purdie, Jr.,
Anthony Gomes,
Shane Deboer and
Luke Spitzer, with Gomes the only one of the group to tally more than one point as he dished out three assists. On defense,
Joe Giardina caused a team-high four turnovers, while
John English went 24-29 at the faceoff "X" and picked up 19 ground balls.
John McGrath was credited with one save against Pace (7-5, 3-4 NE-10), while
Nicholas Badaracco earned his first win of the season in amost 34 minutes of relief, making a career-high seven stops.
The Panthers fell behind 2-0 to open the first quarter before Purdie, Jr. took a feed from
Michael Osmundsen into the back of the net to put Adelphi on the board with 3:07 left in the opening stanza. Three straight unassisted tallies from Gomes, Tuttle and Stavis gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead, before Kevin Vogelsberg scored off a pass from Matthew Cossidente on a man-up opportunity for the Setters to close out the first.
The first three goals of the second quarter were all man-up tallies for both teams, as Pace scored twice to knot the game at 5-5 with 9:46 to play. Stavis and Tuttle then scored for the Brown and Gold to restore the two-goal edge, but the Setters answered right back once more as Tyler Meigel's first tally of the game evened the score at 7-7 with 1:51 to go until halftime. However, the Panthers would not be denied the lead at the break, as Spitzer took a feed from Gomes past PPace goalie Robert Beshlian just 27 seconds later to put the road team on top, 8-7 at the break.
The back-and-forth continued in the third quarter as a goal from Cunningham restored Adelphi's two-goal edge just 21 seconds into the third, but Pace scored three of the final four goals of the period to knot the game at 10-10 with 3:14 remaining, and proceedings stayed even headed to the fourth. Peter Sharp beat McGrath just 47 seconds in to give Pace its first lead since 2-0, but Bentz scored twice off feeds from Gomes to put Adelphi back on top, 12-11 with 7:26 to play. Pace wasn't done, however, as Kevin Cox scored unassisted to tie the game for a sixth time at 12-12 less than 40 seconds later.
Pace had a chance to move ahead late as they held possession with less than two minutes remaining, but turned the ball over with 1:06 to go which allowed Adelphi to clear successfully and call timeout with 54 seconds to play. From there, the Panthers held the ball until Tuttle scored the game-winner with just nine ticks on the clock, as the final margin of 13-12 stood up.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 16 as they host Bentley University in a 5 pm NE-10 contest and celebrate Senior Day.
NOTES
- 13 goals are the fewest the Panthers have scored in a victory this season, as they've done so three times.
- Tuttle also scored the game-winner in a 13-12 overtime win vs. Saint Anselm on April 6.
