Rachel O'Brien had a career night with 10 points and seven assists to lead the top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team past Southern New Hampshire University, 13-3 tonight on Motamed Field. With the win, the Panthers remain perfect at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen suffer their first loss and are now 2-1 and 0-1 in conference action.
O'Brien paced the offense with a career-high 10 points, courtesy of three goals and a career-best seven helpers.
Jacqueline Jahelka continued her stellar play with seven points on six goals and one assist, while
Emily Keesling found the back of the net twice.
Michele Scannell and
Casey Zalewski chipped in one goal each to the cause and
Kate Beier was credted with an assist.
Ryley Weber and
Camille Rosellini controlled the pace of the game for the Panthers on the defensive side of the ball, causing three turnovers each. Rosellini also grabbed a team-high four ground balls, while
Beth Ann Pierce picked up three and Weber and Rosellini won a team-high three draw controls apiece.
Taylor Hayes saw 45 minutes in the cage for the Brown and Gold, making one stop, while
Hailey Peterson logged just over 14 minutes in net.
Adelphi got off to a hot start by scoring the first four goals of the contest, with the fourth goal coming off of Keesling's stick with 21:11 to play in the first half. The Penmen responded with two tallies of their own, cutting the Panther lead in half, 4-2 with a goal at the 16:45 mark.
However, Jahelka's third of the game sparked an eight-goal Adelphi run that started with 14:50 to play in the first and ended with Keesling's second goal of the game at 21:45 to play in the second half to make it a 10 goal game, 12-2. Southern New Hampshire and Adelphi would trade goals in the final 20 minutes, with Jahelka closing the Brown and Gold scoring with her sixth tally, 13-3.
The Panthers return to the field on Saturday, March 19 when they welcome the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College to Motamed Field for a 12:00 pm Northeast-10 contest.
