Softball Sweeps NE-10 Southwest Foe Pace, 2-1 and 9-1

Garden City, N.Y. -- With both teams boasting a pair of 6-0 conference records, it was the Adelphi University softball team that came out victorious in a Northeast-10 Conference twnbill against the Pace University Setters, 2-1 and 9-1 at Janet L. Ficke Field on Wednesday.

Lindsay Mapes edged the Setters (12-8, 6-2 NE-10) in a pitchers' duel in game one, as the junior hurled seven innings of one-run softball by scattering four hits and six strikeouts across her outing, while Brenna Martini and Stephanie Staiano drove in the pair of Adelphi (18-10, 8-0 NE-10) runs. In game two, the Panther bats came alive as the team pounded 15 hits and scored nine runs -- as Martini went 4-4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Staiano (3-3) and Nicole Camera (2-4, two runs scored) also drove in two runs.

Game 1
The Panthers touched up Pace starter Kaitlynn Nelson for two runs in the bottom of the first, which turned out to be all the offense that Mapes needed in her complete game outing. After Krista King led off with a single up the middle and Nicoletta Cuccio bunted her to second, Martini ripped a double into left center to put the Brown and Gold up 1-0. After Camera and Megan Lewis worked out walks to load the bases, Staiano grounded a hard shot past the first baseman and into right field to score Camera and double the Adelphi lead.

The Setters scratched out a run against Mapes in the third, as Tara Bernstein led off with a single and ended up on third courtesy of both a wild pitch and a passed ball. After Jordan Chillinsky singled up the middle to drive her in, Mapes was faced with runners at the corners and one out following a Larissa Labs single to left. However, she retired the next two hitters on a foul out to Cuccio behind the plate and a groundout to second base to keep the Setters from tying or taking the lead.

Mapes was again faced with runners at the corners in the fourth, but got Chillinsky swinging to end the threat, and didn't allow a Setters baserunner in the final three innings to preserve the one-run victory.

Game 2
Kristin Fealy and Caitlin McCann traded zeros across the first two innings of game two, but not before the Panthers loaded the bases with three consecutive singles from Lewis, Staiano and Danielle Cutuli to begin the second. However, Adelphi would not score as Fallon McCarthy scorched a line drive that was caught by the Pace third baseman for a double play, and Christina Palmenteri grounded out to end the inning.

Adelphi was not denied in the third, however, as King and Martini singled ahead of Camera, who grounded one through the left side to score King and advanced to second on the throw. With both Martini and Camera in scoring position with two outs, it was Staiano's turn to drive a ball into the outfield gap, as she launched a triple to to right center to score them both and stretch Adelphi's lead to 3-0. The triple was key for the Panthers in the fourth as well, as McCarthy led off with one to right before being driven in by King's sacrifice fly to left to make it a 4-0 game.

The Setters got one back off Fealy in the fifth, as they mounted a two out rally and put two runners on off a single and a hit by pitch. From there, pinch hitter C. Whigham hit a sharp grounder to second that Camera was able to knock down to save a second run, but one crossed the plate to break up the shutout. However, the Panthers got the run right back in the bottom of the inning, as Martini led off with a single and found herself on third with nobody out after a passed ball. She later came around to score on Lewis' sacrifice fly to right, making it a 5-1 game.

Camera took over pitching duties in the sixth inning for the Panthers, and worked around a one-out single and an error -- which eventually became a two outs, bases loaded situation -- by getting Surina Sandhu to ground out to McCarthy at first base. Adelphi put the game away in the sixth, as McCarthy singled and Palmenteri walked to lead off before both came around to score on Martini's two-out triple to make it 7-1. From there, back to back doubles off the bats of Camera and Stephanie Barbaro -- who took over catching for Lewis in the top of the inning -- led to two more Adelphi runs and the run-ruled sweep.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 2 when they travel to Saint Anselm College for a 12 pm NE-10 doubleheader.

NOTES
