Pleasantville, N.Y. - A single to left field scored the winning run as the Adelphi University baseball team upended Pace University 3-1 in 11 innings earlier today during Northeast-10 Conference action.
With two runners on and two outs in the top of the 11th,
Brandon Morse registered a RBI single to score fellow freshman
Brett Malm to put the Panthers (11-10/2-2 NE-10) ahead 2-1. Malm originally started the two-out rally with a single through the left side before
Eric Hassell was hit by a pitch. Hassell scored during the at-bat following Morse on a passed ball to secure the 3-1 final score.
The Setters (15-8/3-1 NE-10) grabbed the initial 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI double from Andrew Coffey. Adelphi quickly responded in the next half inning as
Michael Cattani scored on a fielding error. The outfielder led the fourth inning off with a single and later advanced to second on a balk. With
Kory Cassara looking to put down a sacrifice bunt, the throw to first by the pitcher went into the books as an error that allowed Cattani to tie the game.
Following six and half shutout innings, Adelphi managed the two-out rally in the 11th to earn the divisional win.
Steven Kuhn sealed the victory with his second save of the year, pitching a shutout out 11th inning that included a double play after allowing a hit.
TJ Santiago earned the victory by tossing two innings of relief, striking out three during the ninth and 10th innings.
Each starting pitcher went at least eight innings despite earning no decisions. For the Brown and Gold,
Jonathon Mulford went eight strong with six strikeouts and one earned run allowed while scattering seven hits. Meanwhile, Tim Deegan went further than the usual nine innings by logging 9.2 innings of work that included four strikeouts and no earned runs.
Seven different individuals made up the seven hits on the day for Adelphi with Cattani and Malm each adding a run while Morse tabbed the lone RBI of the day.
Robert Vani picked up a walk to go along with his hit.
The Panthers are quickly back in action tomorrow, hosting Dominican for a non-conference contest scheduled for a 3:30 pm first pitch.
